OK, OK Nomad. I haven't read what you've said, but I feel genuinely bad for freaking out on you. I'm sorry. Hope all is good with you.

Apology accepted. I hope you're able to get your situation ironed out if you still intend to pursue a TEFL position in KSA.

Dear scot47,

Why do I get the idea that you were born old and tired? Smile

Aww... Feel the bromance. (Sigh.)

Collectively, you both clocked in more than 35 years in Saudi Arabia. Your sandals should be memorialized in solid gold and enshrined somewhere out in the Kingdom's gently blowing sands. Wink

Just as gracious as the apology itself. You don't often meet people who are able to accept an apology in this world.

Dear nomad soul.

Even more mawkish - it's a long-distance bromance.

Actually, though, we're auditioning for the sequel - to be entitled "Grumpiest Old Men."

Just as in the pic - but not in sub-zero temperatures.

Hmm... I was picturing something more like the following:

Hi. I'm the OP. It would be nice if someone insulted me every now and then.

Hang around long enough and I'm sure that it will happen. Cool

Dear nomad soul,

I am nobody's puppet (sock or otherwise). Darn, my nose just got longer again. Very Happy

Dear wavelength,

Well, if you insist - borrowing from the Bard:

"“Thou art a base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy worsted-stocking knave; a lily-liver’d, action-taking, whoreson, glass-gazing, superserviceable, finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd in way of good service, and art nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mungril bitch.”

“I desire that we be better strangers.”

I mean, if you're going to insult someone, why settle for second-best? Very Happy

Fast enough for you. VS?

Regards,
John

I feel much better now. The butterflies of insecurity have vacated my tummy-tum-tum.

Is it possible for me to cancel this business visa? From what I've read, it's illegal to teach on it anyway. (Perhaps I could claim that the school invited me to come over and teach illegally on a business visa, etc.)

Refer back to the first page of this thread. No need to go into detail as to why you wish it canceled other than you changed your mind and are withdrawing your acceptance of their offer. 'Nuff said.

OK. Will have to review. A lot has been said on this thread already.

I just got an update from them:

Quote:
Good day!

How are you sir? We would like to ask if when would you be available to be flown here in Saudi?

Thank you and best regards.

I'm of two minds concerning this. One, is obviously not to trust them.

Two, and this assumes I actually get paid, is to go for the three month probation period, which will put about 8k in my pocket, and then cancel the contract. Obviously, I will have to pay them for the flight out there, the medical exam costs, and the visa costs. (I might also be pleasantly surprised and have the situation work out.)

Hedging my bets here, what do you think?

(The reason I'm thinking this way is because I've lost 10k in England over the last 11 months trying to get employment with an NVQ level 7... which most people here don't have, and seem to dislike people who do. I really do need to replenish my now defunct savings account.)

Seriously. My contract states that either party may cancel the contract within 90 days without a reason.

What I'm suggesting is not underhanded. It's simply a way to check the situation out, and leave if it's horrible.

It's hard to say what you should do because it very likely depends on which company you're dealing with (i.e., their track record and sketchiness rating). Definitely check them out via a search within this forum. That said, it's doubtful most (reasonable) expats head abroad with the intent of working for less than 90 days for the very reasons you gave. Plus, going through with this deal will help you replenish your dried-up bank account. Anyway, since it's your life, it's up to you what to do next. Weigh your options, if you have any left.
