Hello,

I am seriously considering teaching in China for a while if I do not get any MA scholarships this year. I have previously studied in China for a year (back in 2008, so I imagine things have probably changed a fair bit) so I'm not totally oblivious to how China is and I can just about make myself understood in Chinese.

Right now, I'm not sure where to begin even looking - are there any recommended sites that have more 'trustworthy' job postings? What about Uni jobs? Who do people email to get these jobs? I have emailed a few but no reply at all.

Any comments/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There are dozens, if not hundreds of posts regarding this. Hell, there is even a "JOBS" link at the top of the page. Not a good sign.

Tlkdmc is right, davoosh. You say you are totally oblivious about the situation in China!? But you have been hear for a year seven years ago!? I'd say you're totally oblivious - period. You say if you don't get a handout to stay in school, you will deign to grace China with your presence!? Who needs you!

You ask others to do your legwork and make no effort on your own behalf beyond a post that you wrote in less than five minutes.

There are thousands of posts on this topic, and China is a country of two or three dozen cities as large as or larger than Chicago, and you want someone to work it out for you who to trust and where to go!?

You want advice? Here's mine - if you can do so little thinking, reading or doing for yourself as you exhibit here, forget about China. It is no place for the faint-hearted. I have no idea where a good place for you would be except with your mommy. Confused

The blanket "Avoid recruiters at all costs" isn't always the best advice. They can offer decent jobs, just make sure you do you due diligence regarding both them and the schools they offer first.

If you want to contact schools directly go to the wikipedia page for the cities you are interested in and it should list universities and colleges under the "education" section. You can get the website and *sometimes* up to date email addresses from that. Likewise use google maps for the city you're interested in and do a search for "university" and it should list the website with the address.

As the others mentioned for recommended websites or job links do a search on here. The eslcafe search is garbage, 15 year old website and all that, but you can often find better results by doing a google search "job links eslcafe.com" kind of thing.

Kisses.

How are you going to help the guy if you keep sugar-coating it like this?

I'm sorry if I get miffed sometimes, but there are sincere requests on this forum which asks for information, advice and suggestions on a reasonable level, and then there requests like the OP that smack of sheer laziness and a sense of entitlement. They say, Well, I can't be bothered to figure anything out for myself, so I'll spend five minutes writing a request and let others do it for me. The giveaway is that he asks about uni jobs like they are el primo del mundo which shows that he has either not read or not understood anything written on these forums about Chinese university jobs.

This particular OP seems to want to showcase that he has received scholarships in the past, and that he can speak Chinese. Then he seems almost to be making threats about what will happen if no one pays for his further education this year! He says he is "seriously considering teaching in China for a while" (For a while!!!) like China should be awfully glad to have him, and this is the big break they have been waiting for, but alas they're so crooked that he won't lift a finger unless he can be assured of honest dealing. Too bad for China! Rolling Eyes

What a friendly bunch of people!

I apologise if my post came across as "I can't be bothered looking for myself". However, I was merely asking for some advice pointing in the right direction. I'm hardly asking for anyone to 'work it all out for me'. Some websites might have worked well for others, or certain threads that I've been unable to find might contain useful information. I have looked at the Jobs section on this site as well as others.

I asked about University jobs because I have seen often on this board that they are good for first timers, with less hours and less stress. Nothing to do with them being 'el primo del mundo' (I'm assuming you meant 'el mejor del mundo' here and not 'the world's cousin'?). University websites can be difficult to find the right contacts to email, which is another reason why I was asking for (gasp) help or advice.

@ Water rat: There was simply no need to make such ridiculous remarks about my character such as having "a sense of entitlement" or that I'm making 'threats' (lol) about not being able to go back to higher education (without actually knowing anything about my personal background).

For the record, I'm currently working, and it may not have ocurred to you that some people rely on scholarships if they want to continue in education because they don't have mummy and daddy to pay for everything. All your horrible assumptions gleamed from a total of 2 paragraphs that I wrote. Well done, Sherlock.

Also, where did you get that I think 'China is my big break' from? If anything, it was probably more obvious that China is my back-up plan? (You're probably going to lambaste me on that too, as if having a back-up plan were morally wrong or something.)

I appreciate that you've taken the time to be deliberately unhelpful, rude, sarcastic and borderline offensive.

@ Listerine: Thank you.

Does seem like a waste of effort.

This may have touch a sore spot in the Rat's past.

Poor form on the Rats part.

I accept your apology, but your latest post makes it clear that you are a careless reader. Your Spanish may be better than mine, but you completely misunderstood me on three points at least. I did not say it is your big break to go to China, but that you seemed to think it was China's good fortune to have you. And by 'almost threatening' I meant that you seem to think you have a right to scholarships or you will lower yourself to actually working for a living. There's no point explaining the other misunderstandings to you.

These misreadings, and that you say you haven't been able to find [sites that] might contain useful information makes it plain that you are very sloppy and lack basic reading comprehension skills. Or perhaps you just have a really short attention span. So why endeavor to get an M.A. at all? Why inflict yourself on innocent students of English? That's all I am saying.

I'm done.

There is no need for these underhanded insults. I have asked for advice and opinions on which sites people have used that are helpful. You've chosen to post nasty, and insulting remarks about myself based on a few harmless questions. You could've posted with useful or constructive information (like Listerine's comment), or if my questions were really bothering you as much as your comments seem to make out, you could have just asked me to search more thoroughly in a respectful manner.

Nowhere have I said that I have been unable to find useful information at all, nor that I seem to think China would be fortunate to have me. My initial post doesn't give any hint of 'almost threatining' if I'm unable to do an M.A. so let's not talk about misunderstandings or 'lack of comprehension'.

Shalom

Don't mind some of the members of this board, they've been in China too long and have 'gone native' as it were. No one reasonable would say there's anything wrong with saying 'I hope to continue studying this year, but if I'm unable to, I would like to come and work in China'. Unfortunately, reasonable people are in short supply round here.

Where are you thinking of living in China, OP? That might help when it comes to giving advice.

What job you can get would also depend on your teaching experience, uni major and whether you have a CELTA or equivalent. Do you have any of these? Smile

Start emailing the FAOs of the schools/universities where you want to work. Contact me if you cannot find a current list. I have one from 2013.

Thanks all. I have been working for the last 2 years in (crappy) education/teaching related jobs (both to adults and children).

I would ideally prefer a Southern city, because winters in the North were just grim.
