Pretty new to this forum and it's a bit hard to look through all the threads to find information on taxes. Is there already a sticky on this? Basically, if I work abroad as an ALT, how do I deal with filing taxes in the states? I've googled and found some websites regarding JETs. Do ALTs (regardless of which program they're with) all fill out the same tax form?
Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

All US citizens living abroad must file with the IRS every year. The IRS, however, does not tax foreign-earned income that is less than around $90,000, as long as you pass the criteria for how much of the year you are abroad. The form you will file is 2555 - Foreign Earned Income. Read more here: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/International-Taxpayers/Foreign-Earned-Income-Exclusion |

Thanks! Do Americans usually use Turbo Tax (or some online tax preparation program) abroad or are they filling out those forms by hand? |

Americans living abroad use many different things, just like Americans in the US. Some do it by hand. Some use TurboTax or other software. Some have an accountant do it. It depends on your preference and how complicated your tax return is (e.g., from investments). |
