| Why do the mods allow people to encourage 'doing a runner?' It's the practice of doing this that has led to the restrictions in these countries. The dishonourable teachers affect us all in the end. |

I wonder if people who so nobly object to breaking ELT contracts in KSA, also object to breaking marriage vows or even mere breaking hearts?

| As I stated, where I work they stopped accepting resignations mid-semester even though the contract states 60 days notice is acceptable. Therefore, if one expressed the intention to quit before the end of the semester, they were expected to pay back 2 months salary in addition to forfeiting an airline ticket home. Hardly an incentive to do the right thing. |

| A deposit? First I've heard of it. My place asks for Iqama and ID, which they're welcome to if you're gonna run. Who asks for a deposit? And for how much? |

In the bad old days many employers asked for two months salary. Some are still in that time-warp. The better ones have moved on and liberated their serfs.
My experience working for the airline and for KFUPM was that these barbaric practices have been scrapped ! At least by civilised employers. I cannot speak for Ahmed Abuabdullah Contractors SAL and the like.

I think it's a legitimate question. Furthermore, if the employer does not live up to the terms of the contract, why should the employee? |

If the employer breaks the terms of the contract then it could be construed as a technical dismissal and therefore grounds to leave. I've just met too many serial runners I'm afraid. One US citizen cheerfully informed me on arrival for his first day at work that 'he had plenty of experience, 30 jobs in 15 years in 15 different countries.' |
