I work directly for a BOE. My job title is not ALT, but to be honest I am just a glorified ALT with more responsibility. Having said that, in70% of my lessons, I am the main teacher so call me what you like.
It makes no difference, you are still MAteacher and full of crap.
My salary is more than adequate by the way, so don't worry about that. |

I team teach at a high school. If anyone has any advice for dealing with co-teachers, please let me know.
Some are fine but a few are head cases. |

teaching here ranges a lot from ALT work to eikaiwa to classroom teacher and professor.
Between my full time job as a teacher in a private school and other teaching and income, I make about ¥400,000 to ¥480,000 a month. At school I have 20 hours of teaching and meetings, and I work a 40 hour week with many interruptions. |

I am not MAteacher, but I will address your post. Even though you teach 70% of the time, there is a Japanese teacher in your class, so you are technically an ALT. I was a JET years ago, so I worked for the BOE just like you did. I know what your salary is with benefits it will be 350.000 to 400.000 at least that was what mine used to be when I was a jet, but I still considered myself an ALT. Back in the day being an ALT was not considered a bad job as those were the days when it was mostly JET.
I thought I must raise the point that in retrospect I should have not commented on this topic the reason being that it is for TEFL teachers. I, however, teach critical thinking and rhetoric. |

The JET Program pays Y280,000 a month.
When I was a JET participant ages ago, my salary was marginally more, and my rent was subsidized so that I paid a mere Y10,000 for an apartment in a country town. I had a few private gigs, and took advantage of the flight out, but it didn't add up to Y400,000 a month.

Please double check my post, it said with benefits will be equal to 350.00+
i.e. take in to account the market rate of rent offset it with jets subsidized accommodation. Jet paid me a lot more than 280.000 a long time ago. |

I read your post right.
My comment indicates that beyond the base pay, the compensation varies. About Y280,000 is the current salary, with a variety of situations depending on housing allowance, transportation allowance, etc.
As I mentioned in my previous post, rent was a mere ¥10,000 a month. I paid half of the bills because I shared these expenses with the landlady.
I commuted by bicycle to four schools, so I didn't receive a big transportation allowance. Some JET participants commute by rail, car or bus and are compensated for expenses.
On leaving JET, I took the plane ticket and returned to my home country. A predecessor didn't receive this benefit because she married a local guy and stayed. At that time, remaining in Japan after your three year participation meant you forfeited a return ticket to your country of origin. Perhaps a recent JET alumnus can tell us if this is still the case.
JET participants in my year were told again and again, ESID - every situation is different. |

If they were covering health and pension, nicenicegaijin's figures are fair, even without transportation and housing subsidies. It wasn't so very long ago that JETs earned north of ¥300,000 a month. Wasn't this also a take-home figure? |

My gross pay was ¥300,000 On JET in 1999-2000.
At most. the salary and benefits I received were about ¥350,000. That's including subsidized rent, bills, transportation, pension and medical insurance.
ESID, see. |

Is it not easier and more straightforward just to say what the actual salary is?
For the record it's 280,000 in your first year, 300,000 in your second year and 325,000 for your third year.
As for benefits such as subsidised housing this is another ESID. You are not guaranteed subsidised housing and I doubt there is a fixed rate; i.e. you could be lucky like Tokyoliz and pay 10,000 or you might pay 70,000.
And...

Participants pay about ¥40,000 per month towards mandatory health insurance and pension fund. Accident insurance is provided. |

Call me an ALT if you so wish, I'm fine with being called that even though my title on all contracts is something different.
I am not a JET by the way, but you are right about my base salary bracket.
Tokyo Liz, with extra part time work/ privates /something on the side, you can easily clear 400,000 yen a month. |

So MAteacher, why do you even bother posting here?
Head on over to Dave's critical thinking and rhetoric Cafe. |

NOD, I'm sure so,e JET participants can make ¥400,000 if they work their tails off.
I wasn't so worried about maximizing my earnings while on JET, so I didn't take on any extra work.
ESID, ne. |
