I've just been told that Kasetsart University is being privatized in June. Have also been told that Silapakorn (sp?) and Rajabaht Suan Dusit are being privatized also.
Anyone know any more and what might that mean for teachers at these institutions (eg pay-rise)???

Being privatized means they (the NEW BUSINESS owners) are in business to make MORE money.....unfortunately this might have an effect on lowering our salaries due to increased competition for jobs..as we are seen as service providers only. The only other effects I can see it will have on us as teachers are that our jobs will be less secure with fewer (if any) benefits offered.....which translates into a higher turnover of teachers.

| I'm not so sure. Maybe you're right but I tend to be a tad more optimistic. I'm more akin to people who actually know more on this subject rather than speculation. Thanks. |

| Being privatized simply means that businesses (corporate interest speculators) see education as a money making enterprise and buy up (purchase) public center or government related service industries ...it has been going on for decades now....originally a western "first world"capitalistic business model. If you think salaries will rise for us teachers think again....it means we will has less and less of what we have now...IF THAT IS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! |

Private employers don't always pay less than public, especially for FTs.
Though it would be kinda hilarious to see how far foreigners are going to go to live in Thailand...
The owner of my school (a high school in China) apparently makes more money from the school than any of his 2 dozen or so other businesses. And we get paid a lot more than public high school teachers. |

I currently work at Kasetsart University. KU may or may not become a private university in June. As with most things in Thailand, the future is uncertain. They were supposedly going to become private last year, and it got delayed.
As to whether it is a good thing that they become privatized, I would say it is. The government restrictions are significant when it comes to their ability to offer raises and benefits. Some minor improvements are expected once privatization occurs. |
