Sorry, I have another renewal question and my Chinese isn't up to scratch enough to make another trip to the FEC office to ask this one.

If you originally sign a 10 month Sept - June contract then carry on with the same school and sign another Sept to June contract (with a 2 month gap over the summer). Can an FEC still be extended or do you go through the whole process of applying for another one?

I understand that I can certainly avoid any problems by just signing a 12 month contract but my school has offered me a 10 month one.

Just asking as I'm trying to get this renewal done quickly.

I don't know if you're talking about renewing your residence permit (the sticker in your passport that expires shortly after your contract) or if you're talking about the Foreign Expert Certificate (FEC). If the former just remind your school when the RP expires so you can get the 外国人签证数字相片采集回执 and they can take you to the PSB to apply for a new one, usually 2-3 weeks before the curent one expires. If you mean the FEC then let your school worry about that.

If you stay at the same school the RP and FEC still need to be renewed so this doesn't really avoid any perceived problems, it just shifts the time when you need to do these things.

Yeh its the foreign expert certificate that I'm talking about.

I know that it can be renewed 2 months prior its expiry and a renewal takes considerably less time than applying for one from scratch (in beijing anyway)

I know its the schools job to do this but I want to get the ball rolling as early as possible to allow me to submit my residency permit renewal on day one of the 30 days prior to its expiry.

For anyone who has renewed an FEC with the same school; were you effectively out of contract over the summer? or did your contract have to start immediately after the previous one?

Contracts (at our school) are 1 Sept-15 Jul. If we sign a new contract then I suppose legally we're not employed by that school over the summer (even though they're paying us) but if they've helped us get a new RP for the coming year then they've accepted responsibility for us. Have you brought your questions to the attention of your employer? Or any foreign co-workers? What have they said? The experiences of people working in different parts of China are really not helpful because your school and local authorities might have a very different approach to these matters.

FYI, I've been at the same school for nine years now and I don't think I've even seen my FEC. The school renews it for me and they hold on to it.

thanks for the info, that helps.

Suppose if you do resign technically for the future then you're still under their control over the summer.

I haven't asked them about it as I'm still negotiating a pay rise which is looking likely. I don't want to give them the impression that I intend to stay until after that.

I usually finish my work around mid June or 3rd week of June at the latest. From then till 1 September I'm free. The university shuts down in July and there's no-one around for most of the summer. The only thing I'm required to do is be available to renew my RP one week before it expires (usually late July), so there's no "control," it's just life as usual only quieter and more relaxing.

When the school renews the FEC it will start the date they apply for the extension and cover until the expire date of the new contract. So even though your new contract starts in September, the FEC will start in June or July or whenever the schools renews it.

True, all of my FEC stamps start and end in July, regardless of contract dates.

just popping back to add an update on this.

as so often happens in china, you get told one thing by one official then something different by another. All the FEC info I gave was correct but it turns out that the residence permit can be renewed even earlier than a month before its expiry. My school submitted mine today (1.5 months early) and it was accepted
