The OP was referring to smoking pot while back in her home state in the US --- it's legal in Alaska, Oregon, Colorado, and Washington. |

Yes I stand corrected. The OP was definitely 'REEFERing' to back home. But just in case the OP wants to look for it and imbibe here then my warning still stands.

ps I'm Canadian and now I can legally carry up to one ounce and not get a criminal record for it in Toronto. So it's pretty much legal in Toronto too. |

Thank you all for your responses!
I only applied to Effat U and Dar el-Hekma U in Jeddah. I heard back from Effat. Unfortunately they said they would not recognize my M.Ed TESOL because I took the degree online. I told them that I took the degree from a proper Uni and not some online school. The Uni I went to is a good school in the States! The only difference is where your ass is when you're taking the courses. This is super frustrating for me - I really need to pay off my student loans asap. And that sure isn't going to happen in Istanbul. The lira is weak and projected to get weaker. I'm really miffed about Effat not accepting my TESOL. I worked really hard on that degree.... it isn't bullshit.
Sooo my question is.... are all the schools like this in the Gulf?? Is this just a KSA thing? Are there any other schools in KSA that are fairly decent that will accept my distance degree? |

Online not accepted. The Saudis make the rules. It is their country !
I find it strange that foreigners have such a sense of entitlement ! KSA has no obligation to employ anyone ! |

The UAE will accept your online MA. Sadly, KSA won't. It's a pity you didn't know this earlier.

The requirement for on campus degrees was set by the Saudi education ministry and not the universities/colleges. The governments of Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain also do not accept degrees that included online coursework. This information gets confirmed with the job candidate's university registrar during the employment visa process. Having online credits is enough to get the visa application rejected.
That leaves you with Oman and the UAE. Be aware that the Emirati govt. will phase out the public university foundation year programs in 3 years---hiring has already decreased.
Another option are Saudi contracting companies, which typically accept unrelated bachelor's degrees for university TEFL posts if the applicant also has a CELTA or equivalent cert. (See the umpteen ads on the Café's job board.) That means you could still get a job in KSA as long as your BA was completed on campus---you just wouldn't get the level of salary and benefits direct-hire positions generally provide. Additionally, these companies range in sketchiness from tolerable to avoid, so do your research on the employer before accepting any offers. |

I had done some research and found a couple websites saying that the schools were getting a bit more lax about the requirement of "butt in seat" diplomas. Obviously they were wrong if it's a governmental requirement.
oh well... such is life. |

The way around it is with a business/work visit visa; university degrees aren't authenticated for this visa type because it doesn't constitute legal employment. ("Visit" means visiting for a short period rather than being contracted for lengthy employment.) These biz/work visit visas are sometimes issued for teachers hired by contracting companies that have a huge staffing contract to quickly fulfill. Again, that generally equates to so-so pay and benefits. |
