Of course you people do realize that American School Way pays around 9,000 cop an hour, right? There's a reason the place is about 90% native Colombians, who for the most part can't speak fluent English. They also make you work Saturdays if you're full time. If you are willing to work 50 hours a week for a little less than 2 mil a month, that's up to you, but you can go and work somewhere else for 25-30 mil an hour and not have to work weekends. Just sayin.

My friend was offered 48 hours at over 12 thousand an hour. May not sound great. But it's a guaranteed salary which includes public holidays and sick days as well.

Hi dudeteacher --

Do you consider working 48 hours a week to be a good thing?

Yes, they do pay on time, however working 48 hours a week (mandatory Saturday shift) for only about 2 million a month is nuts. You can make around 3 million working only about 30 hours a week at any number of places.

I think it depends on your perspective. My colleague did not wish to work for a primary/highschool. He opted for ASW because they were quick to get him a work permit and the promise of a guaranteed salary. Yes he only makes 2 100 000/month.

For him the pros are: of of the 42 hours a week he works it's actually around 35 hours a week due to some students not showing up or classes ending early. The people are pleasant and he knows he's getting paid regardless of non shows or public holidays. He works an extra fours hours a week on the side and his total end of month pay is around 2 800 000.

If you don't want primary/highschools. Your options are severely reduced. Unless you guys know of alternative options.

35+ hours of contact hours per week? That is a heck of a workload..

But, to put the pay in perspective... I was offered a decent colegio job down in Cali. The pay was 2.2 mil a month.

Seems to be some chaos at ASW these days.

Over the Christmas, teachers were told what their new salaries would be. For the first time, the foreigner would be put on a ft contract with benefits.

Well in typical Colombian style, you spoke with your boss but had to go to another location where the HR is located. You then had to wait a few hours because other teacher were there to sign as well.

Unfortunately, what the Manager of the branch said and what HR thought of the teachers' qualification didn't quite jive. Some teachers were offered less money and promptly refused to sign the contract.

It has put them in a state of panic. They spent the Christmas thinking they had a job and now are frantically looking for one to cover their January expenses.

I had a friend who worked for ASW teaching french in Bogota. He didnĀ“t get payed for a while and quit eventually. I think they owed him more than 1,000,000 pesos when he left.

And, yeah, the long hours, mandatory saturdays, and very repetitive curriculum were things he complained about. He seemed a lot happier after quiting. Very Happy
