|

| Just a general question about M visas. I received a 60 day multiple entry 10 year M visa for China. If my paperwork goes through for a Z visa will that completely nullify that M or will I be able to use the M visa (re-enter) once the Z visa expired. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online. |

You can enter the country with only ONE visa. Either you are here on business or you are going to work with a Z visa. Choose one. You cannot maintain two visas. It's the equivalent of doing a Change of Status on an American visa.
Which one do you want? |

| I do realize what you're writing, BUT it's a ten year visa. I wrote that if I changed status to the Z visa would I be able to re-enter and resume M visa status once my Z has expired. This 10 year thing is relatively new. It'd be shame to lose it. |

Good point. Considering what is at stake I would contact an immigration attorney for the proper advice. Pretty complicated stuff and sort of unchartered water considering the newness of it as you say. I highly doubt anyone on this board could give proper advice, nor could the local Chinese authorities. Would cost you a consultation fee. |

| My understanding is when you apply for a new visa (in your case a Z visa) the visa you currently have is cancelled. |

I agree that the simple answer that one visa has to be cancelled for another visa is probably the correct one. Having said that, I think to spend a bit of money with an immigration lawyer for a consultation with an expert such as Gary Chudorow would be wise to see if a more winning outcome is available. Personally, I would not ask the local authorities, as I have seen first hand and through reports by others, that a fair amount of them do not seem to know the first thing about the field they are in. They do of course lie like they do, before going back to their very narrowly defined positions and not giving two hoots about actually learning the rest.
The OP could also first ask on their boards and see if they would know and give the answer for free. |

No idea how much the multiple entry 10 year visa cost, but I would guess it's probably cheaper than an immigration lawyer. If the requirements for the Z visa are not so difficult, then it would probably be easier for you to just wait and see what happens with your current visa when you apply for the Z one. Worth case scenario, you would need to apply for another 10 year visa down the track. |

He would just need a consultation in all likelihood. Lawyers give them at a good price so they can snoop around to see if there is a bigger pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. |
