Dear Friends,

There will always be major differences between one's home country and a foreign country. Fortunately, most English teachers have decided on their own to be in Taiwan. (As opposed to being transferred to Taiwan by some corporation.)

Also, there will always be major differences between a capital city and the other parts of the country. Personally, I had a negative experience at the Lai-lai Sheraton hotel years ago. I was there for a convention and asked a cleaning lady for one of the newspapers on her cart. She gave me the third degree and told me to go buy my own--unless I was checked into a room.

For years after that, I had a negative image of Taipei. However, my last trip there was quite enjoyable. You gotta forgive and forget. Move on!!!

By the way, I am from Texas. However, wearing a cowboy hat and boots in Taiwan is just asking for (negative?) attention. Imagine some Muslim woman showing up at a Dairy Queen in rural Oklahoma. I assure you that she would get some less-than-favorable comments....Countless other examples could be provided....

I hate to quote old sayings, but "When in Rome........"

Best wishes.

Dear Ziggy Stardust,

If your head had not been so far up your anus, you might have noticed another thread....titled "Now that You're in Taiwan."

Rather than responding to the quotes and re-quotes of that one, I decided to make a few relevant comments in a new thread.

Sincerely,

Taylor

Great post Taylor. I always treat someone else's country as if I'm in someone else's house.

Then I think about how I would like someone to behave in my house.

Dear Fortigurn,

Thanks for your positive comments.

Interestingly, it seems that today's "global citizen" or Globe-trotter mentality leaves many people thinking "the rest of the world" should do things based on one certain standard. Of course, this standard is usually one's hometown, home state, or home country.

Best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

Texas/Taiwan

Yeah, I always laugh when I see other foreigners make fools of themselves. Then I cringe when I make a fool of myself. I don't think the rest of the world should behave like my home town, its full of idiots. I left there to see something better or at least different in the world.
