Yikes. That means you saved a whopping $321 a month or less over 5 years or more. (Where's my bong?)

Yeah, 120,000 RMB over 5 years is not really something to boast about. For someone who claims to be a recluse and not spend money extravagantly on western food or "self-absorbed" reasons he should have saved much more than that

I would venture that 98% or more of teachers (a.k.a Foreign Experts) here make in the area of $1000 - $1300 a month. This is half the poverty line from the U.S.

Once upon a time my salary was about $1,000 USD at a University where I had a nice 2 br apartment for free and taught 10 hours a week. Certainly not comparable to an American fast food worker because I worked about 1/4 of the hours and could spend my money in China where a dollar goes a long way. I lived on about 2,000 yuan a month easily. I moonlighted at local language schools on the weekends and saved about $750 a month. I felt like the richest guy in town. What a great life I had.

For Example: In Beijing, the standard starting pay at Wall Street English is 17,000 rmb a month. 1 day of OT is about 1,400 rmb. Those who have been there longer make more.
I take semi annual trips to Thailand, Vietnam or wherever. I have full medical insurance. I save about 25% of my paycheck.
My lifestyle here is as good or better than in America when I made $65K a year as a programmer.
