So, I'm quite forgetful, and a while ago I made up a list of things I should pack for travelling.
Have a look, and let us know what you would add or delete.
TRAVEL LIST
CLOTHES
1.Shoes – work, leisure, slops

Is this a travel list, or a heading to work in a new place list? With the cv and police check, It sounds like the latter. But since the titles says travel:
liquid laundry soap in a travel size shampoo bottle.
Most places I travel have cheap laundry, but being able to do one set of socks, t-shrit and underwear in the sink each night means you can carry less of everything with you.
edit to add - also a sarong which is good for a multitude of things. |

That's quite a list...! although personally there are some things on that list (medicines aside) that I wouldn't even bother buying at all, either beforehand or when in the destination country!

Assuming it is for moving, I've carried a small cook-kit and utensils (like the kind one uses for backpacking) as well as a thermarest mattress, both useful for camping out in unfurnished apartments until the first paycheck comes in.

Yeah, I'd scale waaay back on each of those categories if just traveling. It sounds like the OP travels with a hundred pound suitcase.

Preferably in one's carry on baggage for ready access at security checkpoints, correct? Also, don't forget sensitive documents for scanning and uploading to Wikileaks from public internet cafes in exotic foreign locales.  |

If your baggage is more than 20kg (1 bag and 44 lbs for our American friends) you are too heavy. Lighten the load.
Wear business attire when you travel (home to destination).
Pack a couple extra shirts, and extra pair of pants, 5 sets of socks and undies. (stuff for work)
Add some casual clothing (a couple of polo shirts and runners) and a pair of jeans.
Unless you are very particular about the brand of your toiletries or perhaps you are headed for some remote jungle location you can usually get by with a short list of toiletries. Buy what you need when you get there.
The same goes for most of the rest of your laundry list.
Some cash and a couple of bank cards are a good plan.

Ooh, good point! My buddies Edward and Julian would be fuming if they saw I missed out such things from my rucksack. |

I'm moving back to Asia for good.
My country has gone to the dogs, and I see my future in Asia, not Africa.
I've spent the last 13 years in Asia, and I'm quite comfortable there (flying back end-month).
My mother has power of attorney to collect and send any bank cards, documents etc. to me. I can renew my passport at any embassy of my country abroad.
Some of the airlines that fly to the east allow 2X20kg check-in luggage. My current luggage weight is 30kg. |

SA Airlines allowed 46kg (2x23kg) + 10kg hand luggage when I flew from Beijing to Jo'burg. So 56kg.
Stick the torso, legs and one arm in the hold and take the other arm and head as carry on.
Simple. |
