Does anyone have any information on this Uni? They are just starting up and advertising for fall positions, and are paying about US $2000 a month (with 10% withheld to prevent runners, supposedly returned at end of contract). That seems like a lot for Cambodia, but is it really? |

It DOES say it all...If they are just starting up, why are they already worried about people pulling runners? |

Alternatively you could think of it as $1800/mo with an end-of-contract gratuity of $2400. All in all it's still low pay unless you're a pensioner or have another income stream. |

How is that low pay for Cambodia? Most jobs I see there pay far less than $2000. Let me phrase that another way: I've yet to see a job posting for Cambodia that pays more than $1000 a month. Maybe I've just missed them... |

On $2k you're not going to save much (and that's with working 50 hours a week!). And a grand a month is ridiculously low for a westerner anywhere in the world. You'll need a safety net of some kind at some point (parents, pension, savings, 2nd income earner, etc.). Remember, airfare home still costs a lot, so do cars and holiday trips, electronics, insurance, nightlife, quality furnished accommodation in a good part of town, good food, cafes, etc. Basically any semblance of a western life will easily cost you more than a $1000/mo, even in Cambo. |

OK, but sounds like a waste of money. Some countries give the teacher a free apartment, health insurance, etc. and also have a low cost of living even today. With all the things you included, you could just add in any frivolous thing and raise the amount you "need" accordingly. |

Referring to Cambo, if you consider any of those things frivolous, then you might be all right teaching there for awhile on that pay package. |

Some employers even in Cambodia offer a free flat. This sounds on the very low end of the scale, especially for a university. |

When I worked there it was a common complaint among teachers that the business men running the schools paid just enough to get by. That means not enough to change anything significant in your life, such as leaving. |
