Can anyone give me the low down on Jumeira University? Is it a good place to work? What kind of benefits and salaries do they provide to expats? What about management positions - salaries and benefits for expats?

They do have a website with job's posting:
http://ju.ac.ae/careers/jobs/faculty-english-education/

You can google the campus location, too.

The sly thing is that Jumeirah Beach used to be the posh section of town for oilmen and those famous Jumeriah Janes, and Jumeira Univerisity is in Al Quoz, the "bustling industrial center" of Dubai. It used to be the center for labor camp compounds. They are just starting out, but they post only one pictures of their shiny new campus.

Note that none of those jobs are for teaching English. They are for content courses taught in English. (applicants need to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores)

Thank you for the reply, Gulezar. I didn't find their website particularly helpful hence my query here. They also recently posted ESL vacancies on the job board here on Dave's; however, those vacancies are not listed on their website. Confused Actually, there's no mention of an ELC/PYP unit. I was hoping someone who works/worked there or knows someone who does/did could maybe offer some information about the place.

The university was founded in January 2012. However, "Jumeira University is pleased to announce that it will be opening its doors to prospective students and their families for the Jumeira University Open Day on May 24, 2014".

There was probably the usual hope that an English Prep Program would not be needed. That might be why English Prep is not advertized on their website. Maybe they are just starting to see that they might need to have some English support. I can't find the posting for Jumeria on Dave's.

Hello,
I googled "Jumeira University and EFL teaching jobs" and found these links (the title of the first one is misleading - indicates online - but is not):

http://www.eslteachingonline.com/jumeira-university-esl-jobs-uae/

Also see:
http://www.careerjet.ae/university-english-teaching-jobs.html

Hope this helps.

Quote:
Salary Package 15,000 plus benefits (annual ticket + health plan)

Based on the rather mediocre pay and lack of employer-provided housing or an accommodation allowance, I suspect the ad is targeting local hires (those already a legal resident of the UAE).

If it is local hire, I doubt that they would offer a ticket... that would be very unusual. But I agree, if there is no housing or housing allowance provided, that is a really crappy salary... only about US$4000 per month.

the first website in my previous posting contains links to jobs in the various Emirates. I clicked on "Dubai" for Jumaira University and found this position which does not state any salary/perks:

http://gotogulf.com/JobDescription.aspx?JOB_ID=67211

I'm always suspicious when there is no link to access info as to campus and other pertinent information.

I've never heard of this institution either.

Posted per Gulezar's request:

It does say applicants from any country and they give air tickets and health, but no housing. They also would prefer someone who is bilingual and has a PhD. That is a very tall order: PhD, Bilingual Arab/English, no housing and at that salary. Do you think that they might get someone from Syria to fill that position? There seems to be differences in the advertizements, too.

The university website now has the job listed:
http://ju.ac.ae/careers/jobs/faculty-english-education/
It is does not give any details as to benefits and salary. You would need to have an IELTS 7 for this position. Some of my students have an IELTS 7!

In any case, the university seems very new and seems to be having some growing pains. There seems to be an entry admission score and a program admission score. Students can enter with a TOEFL 500/IELTS 5 and have to get a TOEFL 525/IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 547/IELTS 6 depending on their degree choice. They are required to have a 70% high school leaving score.
http://ju.ac.ae/admission/entry-requirements/

I would be willing to bet that the place has been around for a year and the English for Academic Studies Program: EAS 1, EAS 2 or EAS 3 did not quite push the candidates up and into the degree programs as quickly as expected.

Those students will not quite be the bottom of the barrel students, but I don't think it takes much academic effort to get a 70% in most national schools.
