I received my summer bonus this morning, and so it's pizza and micro beer at Devil Craft tonight!
Anybody else celebrating their bonus today? |

My colleagues said it arrived in our accounts, but I have yet to check for myself. Hoping the tax doesn't take as big a bite as I think. |

My coworker has a mortgage. He told me that all of his bonuses are quickly transferred into another bank account so that he can make 2 or 3 month's payment on his house. He never gets to see much from his bonuses. But he really likes his house and is here long-term, so it works for him.
I rent, so I can live it up a little for a few weeks but then just invest most of it. |

I have never had any real bonus here. Good on you. Happy for you. But for me, a real bonus, ie more than 10,000 yen, heck more than 2000 yen is a unicorn to me |

I've never really understood why someone would just use a ton of extra money on their mortgage, unless they had an abundance of money. It's not that hard to get more of a return on other assets. |

True, but as a gaijin, he might have a 5%+ mortgage.
Also, most people have no idea how to invest. Not a clue in the world. So, 5% does beat bonds for the most part. I guess |

Yeah, I don't know what the specific details are with him, but when I asked him if he was going to go out and do something fun, he said that he never sees his summer or winter bonuses. He said that it all just goes back into another bank account to pay off his mortgage.
He said he likes his house, but he also said that he could never sell it for what he paid for to have it built. Houses in Japan, usually, only lose value, and you'll never sell them for more than what you paid for them.
I agree with the above comment regarding investing, but I'm not married with kids like he is. So I guess it works for him, or it's the best possible situation for him considering his circumstances.
I would never buy a house in Japan, though. That's a great way to bleed money if you ever decide to return home or leave Japan. |

If you plan to retire in that house, it's a good plan to pay off the mortgage as fast as you can. |

Many loans here are structured to include higher payments during bonus months. He may be contractually bound to put his bonuses towards the loan balance. |
