not sure about how it stands if you get a new one outside of china but i got a new one whilst in china this year (in beijing) and I had 10 days to hand my passports into the psb to get the RP swapped over. Any later and there would be a 3,000RMB fine.
there are loads of posts on the internet that say that you keep it in your old passport. i went by this and it was only by complete fluke that i had to go the psb for something else when they told me (on the 10th day) that i had to submit it then or get fined. |

I'll probably have to get a new passport next year, so, as a matter of interest, did you have to pay for the swap? And if so, did the employer reimburse you? and if not, how much was it? Thank you. |

u know, i can't completely remember how much I paid . I think it was the full 400RMB again. I certainly didn't get it reimbursed as it was seen as my own problem.
I actually renewed my RP last month and found that the price has gone up to 800RMB now, so I would imagine that you would have to pay that again to get it swapped over now.
In hindsight, i should have told them about the renewal when negotiating my contract and tried to get them to agree to pay for it to be swapped over later.
Also, I had to get a new residence permit stating the new passport number from the police (the small bit of paper) before applying for it to be swapped. Once everything was done I had to update the details in my foreign expert certificate. They just add the new passport number on a different page and stamp the main page to say that it has changed. |

I was always paying 400 / semester or 800 / year for the RP.
The need to put a new sticker in a new passport I think is region-specific. As usual i guess BJ is the strictest. My missus had a new passport issued last year mid way through the validity of her RP and we actually went in to the wuxi PSB to ask. They told us just keep both passports and at the end of the year when the permit is extended it'll go into the new passport. Which we did and it was fine. As always however info provided by posters on here is really just a guide...when it comes to potential legal issues like fines, deportation etc. it's always better to hear directly from the horse's mouth. |
