Direct hire is no longer as attractive as it once was (perhaps that should be in another thread) so don't rule out an agency, especially for PNU.

Why so?

There has been an attempt (with mixed results) to standardise salaries so a direct hire is not longer a guarantee of a better salary.

With regards to PNU specifically, salaries are not as high as in previous years, salaries are not paid on time and there is no private medical insurance. The housing used to be in shared flats but with so many teachers there are alsousing student housing for teachers which means bedsits and sharing a kitchen with up to 6 or 7 other people. Direct hires must now pay to use the gym on campus. I'm not sure what is the latest news about paying for utilities. It keeps being mooted that teachers will have to contribute to electricity and water costs. That wouldn't be a significant sum but still....

In terms of working conditions, PNU has a harmonised HR system which means that direct hires and agency workers are treated the same in terms of general working hours and mandatory overtime etc. So the only upside to direct hire at PNU is a chance at a really nice apartment (not guaranteed though!) and a short commute to work (of course, that means you are a long drive from everywhere else in Riyadh).

Thanks for all the information, everyone. Highly, highly appreciated.

I'm receiving numerous offers through agencies and direct hire, so I don't know if the mosque rumours about not hiring South African teachers are true.

Smoke and mirrors, as they say!

Will keep on updating to keep everyone in the loop on the South African question (if it is of interest to anyone but me!) Wink
