I am just curious about what others expected in Saudi and then what they saw when they got there.

For me:

1. For a wealthy country, the skyline of cities like Jeddah are terrible.

2. No rules whatsoever

3. As every Jew learns first - never underestimate the spite of a Saudi (I learned this first hand)

No, I said expectations. I didnt expect those things before I got there. And they are some of the many reasons I left.

I expected them to work harder than they actually do, and that they would happily cough up for private lessons.

Oh how mistaken was I.

But then of course, I know nothing according to some people on this forum, and thus what I say is irrelevant and void...

They did not want to pay for what you were offering.

You offered private lessons. No one took you up on your offer.

Let's see... this was in 1999 (coming from 2 years in Korea followed by one in Thailand) :

Expectations that came to fruition:

- paying off student loan in one year

- spearheading multiple extra projects (Ie; film, writing, music)

- enjoying a multicultural workforce + odd but unique culture

- ability to travel in style

Expectations where I was dead wrong:

- dangerous streets, people, society and threat to personal safety

- giving up broads and booze for the "monk life-style."

- unable to locate Western food-stuff or creative hobby-type materials

Yes, but it is a double negation, so this is what the OP meant: it is everywhere.

Well, I'd have to say I thought the streets were very dangerous, traffic-wise, that is.

Regards,
John

The trick is to find a job that minimises your time on the open road. I lived on campus and taught on campus in my last job. No need to go downtown at all ! Who needs all those shopping malls anyway ? Temples to Consumerism.

I dunno.

On my 3rd car / 3rd locale and I don't consider it a danger as long as you keep your wits about ya. Very Happy

I'll always highly recommend having wheels to saudi-newbie / experienced drivers coming in...for the simple fact that it just opens up possibilities and betters your experience.

(sorry - been covered in another thread already)
