Unfortunately being married to a Chinese citizen gives you no permission to work whatsoever. The spouses visa is little more than a one year, multiple entry tourist visa. If you get caught working on it you'll be fined and deported. To work legitimately you need both a work permit and a resident permit. To get these, you'll need a job with a company licensed to employ foreign experts. It shouldn't be too hard to find a job in a city like Chengdu. I would start by visiting the expat sites for Chengdu, and seeing if they have a job board, and if not just post a message in the appropriate forum asking about work opportunities. You could also try echinacities which allows you to search by city. You might find it difficult if you don't have a degree though, since it's a requirement for the z visa and associated permits.
Also, you might be asked to go back to your home country and get a z visa in order to come back to China and convert it into a resident and work permit. You may be able to convert your spouse visa, but I've known a couple of people who have been forced to go home because they've been told it couldn't be done in China. Kind of crap, but it's the kind of crap you have to get used to living here. What kind of visa are you coming over to get married on? If it's a tourist visa you'll have to swap it for the spouse visa after you get married.
You might want to start looking for jobs now, and find out if you can get the RP and WP with the spouse visa.
As to what you need to get married, I'm not sure if the single affidavit is the same thing, but you'll need some kind of proof that your not married already, and other than that, your passport. I can't remember if I had to produce my birth certificate or not, but it's probably best to have it on hand. |

You can rock a spousal visa but I think you need to do a run to HK every 6 months which can be a drain on the wallet. If you want to get married in China you need a proof that you are single certificate and then you're good to go. Chengdu has an American embassy to get all that jazz done if you'd like. I had to run over to Chongqing which kind of sucked. Had to sign a form and it was proof that I was single, and then had to bring it back to Chengdu and get the damn thing translated because the marriage people cannot read English here for whatever reason. Anywho, Chengdu is a good time, a balance of a booming megacity and farmers blended in to throw you off and give you loads of "WTF" moments. It makes life entertaining, and the best food IMO is over here in Chengdu. You're lucky the missus doesn't come from some sort of fishing city, river fish that is commonly eaten amongst the locals taste like well.. a river fish. |

I just hope this is a wind up.
- No degree
- No grammar
- No punctuation
- No clue?
Having said that, TIC. He'll probably be hired in 5 minutes
Is this an internet bride btw? I knew a guy who came over to marry a girl off the internet. It went very wrong. Thankfully he found another wife within a week - a girl who worked at his school. So there are plenty of back up options if the poop hits the fan, thank goodness. |
