I just received this reply from a Recruiter. It kind of pisses me off. The tone and attitude of this recruiter, just like the other one that said school's don't want me because of my asian face.
Hi,
Please revise your CV and emphasize your teaching experience, I do not need your experirence on fitness or hospital. except no TEFLor TESOLcertifcate, the other disadvantage of you is an asian face. So for you if you lower your requirement I may find a job for you. I have a few positions but salary is 8000-10000 with free apt and meals. If you are interesting please let me now.
Thanks! |

| That's not surprising given you don't have a TEFL cert or TEFL experience. Why are you applying to positions you're not qualified for? |

I didn't apply for any of these positions though. I just posted my resume and created a profile on seriousteachers and then I got spammed with these recruiters asking me if I'm interested in a job. He asked me what my salary range was and I gave him a slightly higher number because I know they like to lowball.
He replied back afterwards and told me this:
"The different schools have different offer. I have a client in Beijing wants teacher to teach in Elementray school or high school, work 10 months, each month 16000 without free apt, but free lunch, another position in Yinchuan, Ningxia Province, 12000 plus free apt and meals. A few positions in Hangzhou $8000-9000 with free apt and meals."
I'm leaning more towards the Hangzhou since I want to go to Shanghai often. Is 8000-9000 a reasonable offer? |

Salary sounds too high for a new teacher such as yourself with no teaching qualifications. If I were you I would be wary.
Seriously, if your aim is to maximise income why don't you look at some teaching positions in HK? Even without a TEFL you could be making 20,000 HKD if you present yourself well and do a good job in the interview. |

The same recruiter told me this.
"May I ask what is your original nantionality? I will contact my client to see which position fits you. Thanks!"
How should I phrase this. I was born in Vietnam and came over to Canada when I was like 4 years old. My background is Chinese though. How racist are Chinese towards Vietnamese people? I'm already getting a good since of discrimination from my own people.
It says on my passport that I was from Vietnam. Should I tell them I'm chinese or Vietnamese? |

I've gotten a few offers in the ranges between 5500-10,000. Most are in the range of 8400-10,000. |

Hmm... You've suggested HK several times yet haven't received a solid response from the OP. |

Yeah, it's a bit weird. Either he is not understanding my posts / doesn't care / has his heart set on working in China. |

Dude! What country is your passport from? If it’s not from Canada, then you may be screwed. If it is from Canada, then just answer that you’re ethnically Chinese born in Vietnam but only lived there until age 4. Pretty simple.
As for the racism, try turning it around. Who do you want to learn Mandarin from? A white person from England or a native Chinese person from Beijing? The person from England may have spent substantial time in China and speaks the language well, and you may take them if the Beijing person wasn’t available. But given the choice…
Welcome to the world of EFL. But as I said before, if you play off your bilingual skills, then you have an advantage. |

Sorry I worded it incorrectly. My passport is from Canada. On my passport it lists my place of birth as Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam. |

Ok, so no serious obstacle.
Look, people with Asian faces still get hired. You just have a slightly higher barrier to entry. I’d emphasize that you’ve lived in Canada since you were 4. That basically makes you a native speaker. That’s all they’re checking.
My predecessor was born in Hong Kong but spent most of her life in South Africa. So it is possible. And it sounds like your recruiter is trying to work with you. Don’t get mad at him over racism. He’s just the messenger. Just find something that works. |

You sure about that? I thought the only good thing going in Hong Kong was the NET Program, and you have to be a certified teacher for that. |

I've only found like 4 job postings from this site for teaching in HK, 2 of them asked for a female instructor, the other two jobs did not provide any housing and after paying for rent and higher living expenses compared to China, the salary ended up being a lot lower then the teaching positions in China. Also the only job I found that was 20,000+ HKD figure required a celta which I don't have. So far I've only seen an ad for 14,000 and 10,000 HKD with my qualifications which isn't even enough to cover my living expenses.
Also I'm looking at the rental prices for a small 1 bedroom apartment, and they are around 10000-12000 HKD. If you can provide me a job posting that pays 20,000 HKD and provides free housing I would gladly apply for it right now. |

…’cause this is a conversation you were in on the HK forums…this month, no less.

I would say go for it, but bear in mind a few of things.
1. You will need to pay for your own accommodation, which is expensive and not exactly value for money. No help with travelling either.
2. If you don't have a PGCE/PGDE/QTS then you'll be stuck on the bottom points of the pay scale, which might not be worth it in the long run.
3. Last point, although they seem to be advertising for NETs everywhere, in reality there are only a handful of vacancies and probably about twenty applicants per school, so don't build your hopes up. Apply, nonetheless. You have nothing to lose. |

| In general I agree with TeacherTim. Unless you are entitled to a dependency visa / RTL / ROA then your teaching options are limited with only a TEFL certificate. |
...and the OP in this thread doesn't even have a TEFL certificate. |

Looks like this recruiter is a no go.
"Hangzhou does not want Asian foreign teacher except you can teach some other course than English, science, math or physics. Are you able to teach one of these course?"
I mean I could always lie and say I can teach science or something, but I didn't do teachers college and I don't think I would be very comfortable teaching subjects unless it was really basic primary or middle school stuff. |
