But isn't that its name oficialmente?

Let's just say that I never bothered to correct her. And, in some regards, believe she was speaking with wisdom way beyond her years.

It's even more amazing that even when said teacher was presented with a dictionary definition of 'expatriate', they go into severe denial about it.

Don't you love arrogance and ignorance mixed into one fine bundle!

Expat is usually assigned to people from the oppressor nations when they relocate to the oppressed regions of the world, often to exploit it somehow. Sometimes expats merely move from one oppressor state to another, but they are not called immigrants. Immigrant refers to those who leave the oppressed regions to clean floors and work on construction etc. in the oppressor states.

There is clearly a Piggie hierarchy at work here...

So that's why we have so many Russian immigrants in London now!

It's more because British snobs like to look down their nose at those they judge to be 'lesser' than they are... Except the wealthy oligarchs who buy football teams - they are not immigrants now, are they?

Other than the term Piggie hierarchy, this sounds very similar to what my former sociolinguistics professor would have said.
