I know your focus is on books; however, don't rule out volunteering short term as a classroom tutor/assistant and observing others teaching. It will give you an authentic teaching experience that books can't. It's how some of us got our first taste of TESOL. |
Or, in some cases, accidentally stumbled into the profession . . . |

I'm going to look into the possibility of tutoring international students at a local university for the Fall semester. |

So I went to the university last week and asked if I could volunteer to tutor foreign students twice per week. They were actually quite thrilled to have someone! So on Tuesdays and Thursdays until December, I'll be tutoring students who need help reading/writing/generally understanding English. Once per week I will also sit in on one of their classes to see the interaction between them and their professor.
I also bought a bunch of TESOL books that I've started to read. I really like Harmer's "How to Teach English" so far. I'm heading to Bogotá in April to teach English. I should have a solid groundwork to build on by the time I get there. |

Yes, Harmer and Murphy are both good reads and references. So much in fact that I keep an ebook version of them on my phone for quick access when I need to look something up.
Cheers,
