having a room at the Patumwan Princess is nice and convenient.

I like the Normandie Restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental.
Only about 12k baht for dinner with wine (4 people) but worth every satang.

Can't think of anything worse to waste money on. Give me a 500THB-per-night hotel (that's pushing the boat out), a 125cc rented motorbike to explore on, and a SangSom soda or ten in a local Thai bar any day of the week. Don't get me wrong; I have money, but you can stay in places like that in most countries around the world. That's not Thailand. |

I'm a subject teacher so that doesn't apply to me, though I'd like to have a go at TEFL in a Thai school for the experience.
It's nothing personal; each to their own. I just can't stand being pampered and pandered to, then paying an extortionate amount for the privilege.
Every time I go down to the islands, the locals moan about all the farangs who stay all-inclusive in the posh hotels and don't spend any time or money in the local community. Worse still, they're most likely pouring more cream into some fat cat's mouth. But what's really unforgivable, is that they're not experiencing Thai culture and way of life.
In many ways, the TEFLers in Thailand are better off: once money isn't an issue to you, life becomes a lot simpler and experiences richer. |

Is this the place TEFL teachers can come to brag about their salaries? What's wrong, nobody in the real world is impressed?
Pathetic. |

Vietnam pays more because it is clearly a less desirable place to live.
Sliding shit scale in effect.
Vietnam has:
- worse pollution than Thailand, long term health implications.
- Some of the rudest locals in Asia. (Hanoi especially)
- Some of the most belligerent drivers and traffic in the world.
- Over-rated cuisine.
- Corruption and bureaucratic non-sense only beaten by the Chinese
- Culture based on lying and creating to get ahead.
I am not saying I would working in Thailand for 30,000 baht, No way. But the $20 plus an hour is quickly on a downward slide in Vietnam as the 20 year old refugees from Thailand keep showing up.

Sure whatever you want to call them. But the wages in Vietnam are dropping quickly as these 'teachers' are willing to work for less and less... Why have a white monkey for $20 an hour when bus loads are willing to work for $12? |
