And Japan. China has backed off to some extent because there's finally been a united push back by several of these countries and the US. I know Japan, the Philippines, and US have put together a loose coalition which seems to be making China think twice. Vietnam is on the verge of joining as well since they've boosted ties with Japan and the US so much recently. They're even dumping trade with China and picking it up a lot more with Thailand.
As it is now, Vietnam can't afford to go against China economically, but at least they're taking steps to not be so reliant on them. |

I think Japan is a different case. The Japanese claims to the islands they dispute have far less merit than the South China sea issues. Almost as egregious as the Japanese claims to the Dok Do islands.
It's helpful to have the Japanese on side of course, but I fear they may weaken the case against China by taking the mickey. |
