Hello everyone and just quickly I want to thank everyone on here who has contributed so much helpful information for newcomers as well as the more seasoned Gulf teachers. You guys are great
MY QUESTION:
With the situation being that you must obtain an Exit/Re-entry Visa, do you ever feel trapped?
What if your employer or sponsor will not allow for the exit visa?
My worry is that something could happen back home and I will not be granted permission to leave (and then re-enter). Ever heard of a situation like this??
I am supposed to depart for KSA within the next month….
After all, what is the worst that could happen in this regard??
Thank you all!

| There's no clear answer --- it depends on the employer. But if you're heading off to Saudi Arabia with the expectation of being "trapped" or worrying that something will happen back home, then maybe you need to rethink working in KSA altogether. |

Some employers let you have a multiple exit visa. And let you keep your passport.
Dodgier employers may not and there may be problems in getting an exit visa.
Are you sure that you want to leave Kansas ?. |

1- Oh yes, I feel "trapped" every day, every hour. Know why? Because for all intents and purposes, you really ARE trapped here. But like chemotherapy or constant flies in the face, a bum leg, a full set of dentures or squeaky baldness, you eventually get used to it. But there's no doubt you are trapped. You cannot be sure 100% that you can simply depart anytime you want. You can't.
2. You mentioned in a 2nd posting here that you have trouble falling asleep and that you're on some kind of "medication" to help you with it. You wonder if your medication is available in KSA and so forth.
Excuse me, but you give out every indication that you should seriously FORGET about working in KSA. You give no indication of your situation: m/f. single/married, experience overseas, kind of job you're going to in KSA, age, ever been to KSA or Middle East before and so on, so it's difficult to advise you adequately.
Let me put it this way. If I were a KSA employER and you applied to my company for a job and I found out about your concern about "being trapped" and "being on medication for sleep disorders", I would no way hire you. KSA is too high a stressful situation in the best of circumstances to deal with issues like that. You may think you can control these issues, but chances are they will get totally out of control here. Medical care for that kind of thing is very "comme ci comme ça" in KSA. Working in KSA is not at all like working in Florence or Geneva....or even China.
If you are battling certain "demons", KSA is not the place where they'll be dormant and quiescent In fact, chances are they will manifest themselves in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Be sure you know what you're doing before committing to a KSA job. |

The OP may like it in KSA, or may experience psychotic episodes.
With me, the symptoms appeared after I left ! |

The fact is that it depends on your employer. We have had a number of situations over the years... one where a teacher was not allowed to leave even though their spouse had developed a serious medical issue that couldn't be properly treated at their location in KSA, so they needed to get back to their home country. They were delayed for months. There has been more than one example of teachers not being allowed to return home for family funerals. (parents/grandparents)
So... can you cope with that worry? KSA can be a stressful place to live and work. If your sleep issues are stress related... and this worry adds to your stress level, you may want to rethink working there.

I'm a newbie to KSA, but as the others say, it all depends on your employer. My employer has their faults but I have my passport and a multi-exit visa valid for 6 months in hand too.
This means if you want to hop over to Bah rain or UAE, you can.
But as has been said, seriously think about whether KSA is right for you. Don't just come for the salary. |
