Unless the mob of people are friends or "associates" of the Chinese person involved in the altercation, based on everything I've seen & heard in China, I agree with hdeth's perspective. Chinese tend to avoid direct confrontation like the plague. And despite widespread xenophobia, there is no sense of solidarity in the country that would motivate strangers to join in a melee just because one combatant is a foreigner. In someplace like Thailand, different story. But not China.

Sure, all these people are just telling lies. Nothing to see here.

No gun problem in the US either. I went there twice and didn't see any guns or get shot at. It's all BS.

"All these people." Who are the faceless entities in these apocryphal accounts anyway? Hey, a guy at a bar told me about his friend who knows six people who were beaten up by gangs of angry Chinese for being white in public. Therefore, Chinese people are all hot-tempered and roam the streets in packs looking for foreigners to attack. Wow, I can build a straw man too!

I made my statements based on two years of living in China in three different areas, including the "wild west" of Xinjiang. I never felt in serious physical danger in any of those places, even roaming around at night. I got into angry verbal exchanges from time to time over things like queue-cutting, but nobody ever attacked me, and nobody ever joined the dispute to support his fellow Chinese against me. No westerner I've ever personally known in China has ever told me a story of experiencing a "pack attack" either.

Has it ever happened to anyone? Does it ever happen? In a country the size of China, I'm sure it has, but that doesn't make it any more of a common occurrence than getting punched out in the USA in an argument over Nutella waffles. At the end of the day, people are going to believe what they wish to. So by all means, adhere to the yellow horde theory if it makes you happy.

Yeah, I'd add on to this that sometimes you have to keep in mind that the same types of behviour happen at bars/other high-class establishments everywhere around the world.

I've had friends back home jumped and robbed by a group of guys while walking alone, I've seen a gang of friends team up on a guy and rough him up outside of a strip club, and I'm sure everyone's seen the stereotypical young high-school girl clique gang up on an unpopular girl (maybe not physically). And all of this was in the most dangerous place in the world, Canada. Laughing

It boils down to Orientalism. When someone from our own group/society/country does something bad we blame the individual, when it's someone we classify as an 'other' we blame the whole group/society/country (the 'faceless entities' Aristede mentioned above).

Some folk just thrive on this kind of crap... it is usually tied to event in their past that color the way they see the world around them ... you gotta feel sorry for em'... their disappointment shines like a beacon of animosity and if you don't share their world of hate view, then your wrong...

The all for one and one for all is common among friends...and to tell the truth if my buddy is getting attacked then i would do what ever I could to stop him from being hurt.. even if he is wrong.. later I am sure we would have a discussion bout it but at that moment I would be all for one... but to link this to Chinese people is like linking it to blacks or Mexicans or a nationality like Austrians or Americans ..

A friend of mine and his buddy got jumped in Shanghai. Apparently they had a falling out with an arrogant taxi driver, who then called for back up. Laughing That's why we always use Uber, kids.

I've heard of foreigners getting outnumbered and jumped pretty regularly. Some getting stabbed to death, etc.

The most recent stabbing death was a Chinese (Sanletun) woman who was with a Frenchman ... He has stated he though the guy was joking when he said he didn't like Americans and was carrying a Japanese sword, so he turned his back and the guy stabbed his girl. There is a great rap ... Uber Rap by Melo he hates the taxis also ...mad respect for the taxi drivers .. they do stick together....

Since when are taxi drivers your friends? How can you have a falling out?

You drive, I pay, it's that simple.

I have been kicked out of a cab before. The lady was being a ------. she kept asking if I was going to vomit. I was drunk, but the answer was no. I realized a few blocks into the drive I had no money Razz and told her my wife would pay when we got to my destination. She stopped and said get out. Next driver comes, told him I had no money but my wife would pay, and we were off.

No problemo. I am OK with you posting about knife attacks and the hit and kill driving phenomenon is fine. And I aporeciate you are inclined towards posting images of bloodied corpses and dying people. Nonetheless, it is understandable you find commenting about group beatings as being akin to "thriving on this stuff... hate".

So you are a contrarian, and like to take whatever angle represents a polarity. Straw men arguments designed to discredit an argument and personalisation are your friends. Thus the rapid switching of position from post to post. So be it. You are unique, and have been doing it here for a decade or more. So I am cool with it.

The simple, drama-free fact is that these group meltdowns happen sometimes in China. They mirror certain other violent confrontations, such as the bust ups in basketball and soccer games between locals and visiting teams. There are plenty of examples on youtube and via google. Typically they involve members of the Chinese team kicking and punching a foreigner or two who is surrounded and on the ground. Meanwhile Chinese spectators and officials descend into a state of emotional frenzy. The well known China Brazil basketbrawl is one of several in recent years.

These events represent a shadow component of the Chinese psyche, and a cursory examination of modern Chinese history shows similar events involving foreigners during turbulent times. Anyone who is smart will recognise this and avoid unnecessary confrontation in public spaces. It is not about demonisation, but recognising the latent emotional baggage of a country that is only recently out of some of the most violent and traumatic times in human history. Romanticising China is just as stupid as demonising it, and just might lead the naive into troubled waters.
