| 5000 in China is a lot more than 250,000 Yen in Japan when you look at purchasing parity. A beer is 1 kuai in China, vegetables are often less than 1 kuai a kilo. |

Um, this thread is a no-brainer.
Japan jobs pay more, but 19,000 yuan a month in japan doesn't sound like much when I consider that Tokyo is even more expensive than London. I was on more than that in London but I could just about get by on it, here in Wuhan on 5300 a month (going up next term) I seem to have lots of disposable income, eat out all the time, buy lots of music and films, etc.
Having said that I've heard of teachers getting paid 150 quid an hour for private teaching in Japan, which owuld be unheard of in China |

| I see purchasing power mentioned a lot, but what I'm wondering is if I have to pay off a student loan (obviously the same everywhere) is China still a good idea (ie are expenses so high in Japan). |

| True, but can anyone think of a place in the world more expensive than Japan? I experienced it for myself for a night during my stopover back to Canada. Ask someone who is teaching there how much they can save, every teacher I've asked working in Japan cant save a penny. When I got to China I had to borrow 1000 rmbs and that got me by untill my first pay. I'm not sure about this one but I think you need a couple grand US just to get you started in Japan. it was easy to save and travel in China and I cant wait to go back! Cheers |
