I made the move to Shanghai over the Summer, basically moving to a full time UK university job, which in itself is decent money, and only requires 3 days a week, 32 weeks a year, leaving lots of time to pad out the earnings. I must say, SH seems to offer more in this respect than my previous life in GZ. There are a LOT of part time gigs available in the 300 to 400 RMB / HR range here, I have already signed up for two of them. I passed on one jog which was 2400 for a full day, once a week at a university which was half a teacher short. A busy day for sure but 2400 a day is good money in any country, best part of $400 US a day.
If one is willing to do a 4 or 5 day week, it is quite easy to make and extra 10 K a month and certainly feasible to make 20 K.
There are side jobs offering offensively low wages - I was offered 160/Hr only yesterday, but with a little patience one can find the better opportunities with relative ease. I made maybe 20 applications online to part time gigs which yielded a lot of dross, but also the 2 decent ones; I am happy with that rate of return. |

Glad you're enjoying it.
I'm in the opposite camp, and think Shanghai is massively overrated.
Will be returning to a smaller southern town or Taiwan, Malaysia even ASAP.
I just posted a thread on my thoughts re. big city life. |

| 160/hour in Shanghai? Really? I haven't even seen an offer that low since I moved here. Lowest I've seen is 200. One of my students was trying to arrange a class with some SAT guru with about 30 students at 200rmb each. |

I am not actually in downtown Shanghai, I am waaaay out on line 9 (Songjiang), where my rent is less than half that of my colleagues living in similar conditions downtown, the air is a lot cleaner here, tho far from pristine and the general cost of living is lower. I know several people choosing to live downtown and commute out here, personally I think they are nuts. I go into the city coupla times a month, for shopping that is not available out here, (Marks and Spencer, CitySuper) and to eat free food at Morton's, but otherwise life out here is good and affordable. 35 KM makes a big difference in terms of big city living |

Hampson's, I know they are crap, I applied simply for informational purposes, the quote was 160 - 210 for one on one classes, to which I sniggered and wished them adieu. |

Last week 3 cocktails at 50 RMB a pop, 15 steak sandwiches at 0 RMB a pop, in total 150 for a humongous meal and a few drinks. |

| I had not heard of this free steak sandwiches deal....now that I have I am extremely interested. Were they pretty good? Anyone else have experience? I'm in Beijing but there's one here too...had never heard of it before but decent filet mignon is pretty tempting...the stuff most supermarkets sell is outrageously priced and low quality. |

I have had a friend get 25 once, and he reckons a dozen or more is standard practice - take two every time, they come around every 10 to 15 minutes for two hours. The average sandwich, in the Pudong joint is about the size of a cigarette pack - slightly thinner and longer. Eye them up carefully, the meat is not equally distributed, you can get megalumps at times. My guess is they cook up the offcuts of the steaks they prepare for the night ahead and serve them up. Apparently this branch has been doing it 5 nights a week for at least 3 years. I have no idea how widespread this thing is - but it is certainly worth it. Nothing to stop you having 1 cocktail for 50 RMB and gorging on steak sandwiched if you so desire.
I agree with you on supermarket beef with one exception - CitySuper do a faux Wagyu which is great value, and well tasty at about 100 rmb a pound |

I believe that is so, I am starting off conservatively, but I will hit my first target easily, I had a figure in mind, and it has been surprisingly, encouragingly easy to attain |

250-400 is pretty normal for privates in Shanghai. I turn down more than I can take due to just wanting more free time. I live in Jing'an and find things here very reasonable. So much competition between restaurants there are deals every day of the week.
I shop for groceries on-line at Auchan and the prices are pretty much like every other city. Even special on-line sales at times that you can stock up on. Free delivery next day.
Morton's on Friday nights for free steak sandwiches is a hit! |

Haven't quiet hit the heights 0f 400 yet, but 300+ for sure. I'll check out Auchan. Also, Kate and Kimmi do good quality online stuff |
