I have no sympathy for bootleggers or drug-dealers. |

25 year veteran should have known better than to be driving round with bottles of home made in his car-i fail to see how he was a 'drug dealer' though? And I think one year spent in jail is more than enough punishment for a 74 year old....without putting him through the lashing! |

Well, there was an "or" - and besides, alcohol IS a drug.
"What type of drug is alcohol?
Alcohol is classified as a depressant because it slows down the central nervous system, causing a decrease in motor coordination, reaction time and intellectual performance. At high doses, the respiratory system slows down drastically and can cause a coma or death."
Downer.

Makes you wonder what idiotic people think they can get away with, if a 74-year-old with 25 years here is driving around with hooch in his car!
Maybe he's suffering from dementia, in which case his enablers should be the ones receiving the lashes. |

350 lashes not 360.
If executed, it will be 50 lashes every Friday for the next 7 weeks.
Possible rescue/exit for him is for the King to halt the flogging for medical reason - The Magic Kingdom does not want to be accused of 'inhumanity' in case the man dies while being flogged.
Of course, the British government might produce a medical certificate to the Magic Kingdom to halt the flogging. |

I just happened to be roaming around Dave's and have some time to kill for this subject. Most people would not think giving someone 350 lashes for having alcohol is objective or reasonable. Most people would not think Saudi Arabia's puritanical approach is objective or reasonable.
The rest of the posting I came back and deleted. If anybody saw it, I meant every word of it. |

Asserting what most people think isn't mature, reasoned, or readily demonstrable.
It's an appeal common to teenagers and domineering spouses.
Nor do I understand why anyone would comment to a post they've removed from a public space that serves both to temporally engage a community and form a record of it. Are your most convicted views a vital matter of which you imagine others can be deprived or privy?
Sovereign nations have a tendency to differ about many things to such degree wars are waged. They tend to conduct their affairs without survey or international census.
What are you confused about? |

I'm confused about nothing. The Saudis in particular among Middle Easterners have benefited from Western freedom, free exchange of ideas, free exchange trade without religious impediment. Both of these have fueled research into science and technology which was used to pull up oil out of the ground, originally at some financial risk, while the Saudis were largely riding camels and begging for food. This is how the Saudis have used the loads of money coming in from the oil wells and equipment graciously handed over to the Saudis by the US. Also is this how they pay back their debts to the West. Also as far as State sovereignity goes, when Iran, ISIS, Russian and China pick apart the Middle East nobody in the West is going to want to go to war over a motley country like the KSA. The US will take out the oil fields and leave the Saudis to their own stupidity |

Living in the KSA for 25 years is surely punishment enough! |
