|
|
Hi Everyone,
My public high school in Beijing made me a college admissions counselor. I love how it uses my knowledge of global comparative education systems.
I'm thinking of getting a college counseling certificate and maybe a Master's. However, I wonder what I can do afterwards.
Do you guys know other markets, besides China and Korea, that would value this service.
At a conservative estimate, I'm worth at least $50 an hour. (Chinese often charge at least 4x this much, even if their total crap). I'd love to move back to the Middle East or North Africa and retain this salary. |

Dear buravirgil,
No joke - I once made the mistake of asking a class here if anyone knew what a homophone was.
After a few moments of puzzled silence, one (male) student ventured
"A cell phone for gays?"
Regards,
John |

quite a few Oops...not with that particular link, but cheezburger culture is the domain to search, or a Google search will return many hits for cheezburger's database. |

It would seem great (or perhaps not-so-great) minds think alike.

Aw, shucks. I'm flattered, but these types of inquiries really aren't that difficult. They just take some research and creative thinking (and sometimes, common sense).

Speaking of research, for starters, you need to take a look at the Overseas Association for College Admission Counseling as well as the National Association for College Admission Counseling, if you're serious about this path. Become a member.
That said, I find it odd that you're gung-ho on being a college admissions counselor. Based on several of your discussion threads over the past year or so, you've been very uncertain about your own academic and career goals. How would that translate into helping others decide their future? Plus, you don't seem clear about what the role of college admissions counselor entails nor the knowledge, skills, and abilities you'd need. As for your contention that you're worth at least $50/hr, the average yearly salary for a college admissions counselor in the US is... click here.
Anyway, start walkin' the talk. I wish you luck. |

Moi?
Plainly answering inquiries simple and complex requires knowledge and effort that is rare by any account. You consistently provide informational remedy to concerns beseiged by commercial agencies and sales pitches. A guard elder has nurtured a seemingly tireless advocate. |

Thanks. I'm making some great gains in this current position.
What differentiates me is that I was accepted into an Ivy League school. While I do not believe acceptance to one of these 8 schools makes me superior, and even advise students away from applying to Ivies in favor or more specialized schools, many East Asian parents are crazy about it.
I seem to have more knowledge than most people here, and more than 95% of Chinese agencies/admissions counselors. |

In the US (I'm assuming you are from the US, given your mention of "Ivy League" schools) in metropolitan areas with a high immigrant population, you will find an assortment of community based programs that address both educational and social service needs to varying degrees. I have seen a number of positions advertised to assist and advise secondary students and young adults who hope to pursue a college education. Check out idealist.org for job descriptions and preferred qualifications. Salaries that I've seen for this type of agency fall short of what you've mentioned, however, clustering in the 30's. |

Thanks.
UCI, UCLA, UC Riverside, and a few other programs offer a $5000 college counseling certificate program. Coupled with two years of experience, that'll make me registered under the IECA.
That should at least give me the opportunity to practice on nights and weekends for students in the US. Maybe full-time.
It appears the demand is high, with ratio's per state ranging from 300 - 1000 students for every counselor. |
