| Hi everyone, as someone fast approaching 60, I am interested to know what countries will employ teachers 60 years old and over? I am aware that many countries will not issue a work visa once you reach a certain age, but which ones are accepting of us more "mature" types? Many thanks. |

Over 60 ? A lot fewer than in the past.
Best advice is to get your feet under a table somewhere BEFORE that dreaded number hits. I took my own advice and moved from Saudi Arabian Airlines, who enforce universal retirement at 60 Hegira (=58 and a bit Gregorian) and moved to KFUPM who have a fuzzy border above 60 if you are already in there. Under pressure from the Ministry in Riyadh KFUPM and other unis in KSA are now "encouraging" over 60s to retire. One of my friends did recently just after his 79th birthday.
I know of nowhere in the ME Region that will take on newhires over 60.
I have heard that this is also true now in China. |

If you are talking about work in the tertiary sector AND/or you have relevant post grad credentials then most of Asia is flexible for a "guest lecturer".
If you only have undergrad qualifications then most of Asia falls off the map at 60.
The outer provinces of China are an option as is Mongolia for over 60's.
If you are American then the US protectorates in the Pacific are an option for over 60 even if you don't have a B.Ed or Teacher's license.

I'll vouch for that. I got hired this year at 62 in Micronesia teaching public high school. Scant openings but they exist if you do some digging. US$10k a year plus housing. No terminal age, I'm told, as long as I'm a benefit to my school.
Not restricted to Americans btw (I'm from Canada). |

I've worked with half a dozen 60+ teachers in China and I've only been teaching here for 6 years now. Worked with all of them at an International school in Guangdong. Last I knew, 4 of those 6 were still going strong and the two eldest teachers had retired to their respective homelands.
When it comes to older teachers getting hired in China, it often depends on "knowing someone" or being recommended, but in my experience, older teachers who were good could just about write their own retirement date, depending on the school and their continued ability to "do the job."
Of course, being older often means taking a year-to-year contract at a school in China to a very literal level. The older teachers I worked with made themselves invaluable by mentoring and teaching specific subjects, along with putting in longer office hours, and one-on-one tutoring. The students and the rest of the faculty respected them and valued them for it too.
