Hi everyone Very Happy

I was advised to post this on the Middle East Forum.

I've got a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education) for teaching Mathematics from the UK. I've taught Mathematics for several years in secondary schools in the UK. I'm just completing an online TEFL course.

Could I please ask:

Would I be able to get a ESL/EFL job (not Maths) in the Middle East based on the above certificates?

Thank you.

Online certs won't get you anything you would want. If you do a search you can see what the better employers require, and get, from applicants.

You are qualified to teach math - why not try the better international schools k-12?

An online cert isn't worth the paper it's printed on; you'd need some solid, TEFL-related qualifications and experience to teach EFL in this region. As Helen suggested, why not pursue a position teaching math in an international school? Look at the postings and requirements on teachaway.com.

CELTA or similar is required by most decent employers in KSA.

Yes, I would apply to the international schools because as you don't have a MA you will be paid at the bottom of the scale, especially as you don't have the CELTA or Trinity TESOL cert.

Maths teachers are in some demand in KSA. There are many schools using English-language curriculum.

They usually want experience teaching ESL. However I think you could get a job in the KSA teaching ESL anyway, especially with your PGCE. However there are schools in the KSA that want Native English Math Teachers also. You can find those jobs on this site as well as some others that I can't list here. One option is to try to get a job with a business visa that does not force you to continue working for a Saudi company and then look for a school that wants a Math teacher while you're still in the KSA and will also bring you in on a business visa.

You're making a bad career move. The EFL industry is inundated with flakes (not necessarily the teachers), it's losing money and it appears that it will get worse. You already have a couple of years experience teaching maths, another three years of teaching in the UK would definitely make you eligible for some good "real" international schools.

He would be a good candidate for many international schools now. If he has 2-3 years of teaching experience that would be fine if he interviews well.
