				| I have a 5-year professor visa for stays up to one year and a residence card that expires on April 30, 2016.
If I want to look for work in Japan, do I need to extend my visa and renew my residence card? Can this be done if I'm not employed?

I'm currently living in the U.S. I may want to come to Japan in March to look for work before the new school year.

 Thanks,

 Aaron

				| You posted this earlier and didn't come back to answer questions.
Basically, what is written on your residence card is important - yours says it expires April 30th 2016, so you have until then to apply for a renewal.

A status of residence can have a maximum term of 5 years (except for PR) but 1 and 3 year terms are common - if the residence card says for stays of 1 year, you only got a 1 year term.
