Hey all

I wanted to see if anyone is currently working in Colombia and if you may know some schools I could submit my CV for any openings later this year (preferably not in Bogota). I am returning to Colombia for my 3rd time because it's my favorite country of the 24 I have visited and I would be looking for a long term contract more than a year if possible. Also some great info on the work visa process although, does anyone know how strict they are with Uni degrees? I have taught in 5 different countries and all have "said" it's a necessity to have it...but I was hired with no problems getting work permits even though I do not have a uni degree. Anyways thanks in advance for any replies!

Hi,

You've visited 24 countries and Colombia is your favorite. From what I've heard, I don't doubt it, but can you say a few of your reasons why?

Also, you don't want to teach in Bogota. Why is that?

Also, you are getting teaching work without a BA, but it is working out okay?

Thanks.

You might try checking out the schools on these lists:

http://www.tefl-tips.com/2014/09/the-best-tefl-jobs-in-colombia.html

Your best bet will be to head on down, knock on doors, and apply in person.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on how things go.

Colombia is my favorite for many reasons...It's one of the most diverse countries in regards to different climate zones..you can go to the beautiful beaches on the north coast, Mountains in Bogota, tropical in Cali and Medellin, desert in Neiva and of course The Amazon. The food is amazing, the people are great and welcoming, it's not overly expensive, IMHO Colombian women are some of the most physically beautiful women on the planet lol....it's just everything to me, it's all encompassing. The history, culture and sites.

Yes getting teaching work without a degree isn't that big of a deal, it limits where you can work such as the British Council, IH and things like that, but I'm not a McChain school lover anyway so that's fine with me.

I don't particularly want to work in Bogota as I'm not a fan of the climate lol I'm a tropical kind of guy. Very hot weather suits me better.

Thanks ESL Prof for the links again! I really appreciate it! Yes, just like most countries it is probably much better to just arrive and take a day to travel around handing out your CV in person to schools.

Anyways, thanks for the links I'll check them out guys!

You and I sound damn similar. I've been to about 25 countries, lived in six and Colombia remains my favourite.

I prefer outside of Bogota as well because I'm no fan of the colder climates However, I'll be starting off in Bogota as it seems easier to get work. Spent five months in Medellin a few years back and barely got a thing. Hurt to watch less experienced people get work because they know someone at the school.

Worked in Bogota for six months some years ago and loved the people.

If you watch "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," Bogota is portrayed as a steamy, tropical hell where Angelina and Brad sip rum and sweat under ceiling fans while dressed in skimpy clothing...And we all know Hollywood's portrayal of other places is always accurate! Smile

Frequent border runs, like very three months or so...

I took a visa run to Tulcan on the Ecuadorean side of the border to renew my 90 days. No questions asked.
I took a bus from Popayan to Ipiales and then a van once I was across the border.

Tons of hotels for a weekend trip. You can find rooms from $6-$12 a night or might pay the extra expense for a nice room for $25 a night

However be smart- don't advertise you're a foreigner, especially an American. When I was coming back from Ecuador, the bus I rode on passed a mess load of checkpoints, the last one manned by the police, army and paramilitary stopped the bus so they can get all the buses from that route together and escort them on the main road. Evidently, a few days before the trip, some bandits boarded a bus to rob it. At first the driver refused to let them on, so they killed him before robbing the passengers.
The reason for the massively armed checkpoint was because the army was tipped off that bandits got word that one of the buses passing through Pasto had a 'foreigner' as one of the passengers- gee, I wonder who that could be.
I laughed it off until I heard an American was taken off a bus by FARC in the north.
But again, be smart and don't advertise that you're a foreigner. The threat of bandits can be found in many countries, the key is not to carry anything of value with you on your trip.

Dude, It should be $50 US just to present your paperwork. Then if they agree everything's in order, it'll be $250 US more.

You pay everything right there in the office, you won't need to go to a bank and make a deposit. If you're lucky you can get in and out in one day.

So you can actually get your visa the same day, if all the paperwork is correct?

Can anyone confirm this? If this is true, in my mind it's a big plus for teaching ESL in Colombia.

Bump. Has anyone gone to Colombia and successfully received the work visa lately? If so, please share your experiences.

Maybe a bit of a late reply but I got my work visa back in July/August time no problem. I know right now there seems to have been some issues with lots of people unsuccessfully applying for work visas with immigration, I think the amount of visas they've given out this year has gone up by 1000s so maybe quotas have been met?

You can for sure get your visa the same day (you have to wait forever at the ministry though) but the thing is you then have to go register it at migracion colombia and get a foreign cedula, which is another long ordeal that will require you to be there possibly for as long as 8 hours. Nothing in Colombia gets done quickly, especially when dealing with the government.

I would echo these sentiments... I was in Cali for 4-5 months a few years ago and nothing decent came up. A bottom barrel language school had 5 other applicants and a decent colegio offered me 2 mil pesos a month with no accommodation.

I really enjoyed myself and made lots of friends through salsa etc, but the work options were very poor on the whole.
