That's all well and good, granddad, but I think the point of this thread is to give present, potential TEFLers some help and not a history lesson in 17th Century migration. |
I’m not always a scot47 fan either, but look again at your above response in a day or two.

For many, TEFLing means making "short-term" friends, again and again.
But that has exceptions. I'm still friends with colleagues from decades ago. And not just though e-mail. There have been visits, back and forth. |
Dear John
From little acorns, mighty oaks grow, and as I can’t think of a better phrase, I mean to say that short-term “friends” can become real friends as I imagine you know. Even I, an office saddo, still have TEFL friends from fifteen years ago.
I also have a wife, but this was clearly a wrong reason for TEFLing, so I’m too ashamed to discuss further. |

I've pretty much determined this is the path for me right now. I'm currently saving up for the CELTA and am starting to learn the local language. Hopefully within six months I can make the move! |
Good for you, AnzaExo, have you lived in or been exposed to other countries or cultures? It's not a 'done deal' either way but it'll help when you make the move if you've had some experience of other cultures.
Also, do your research on the school: Personally, I could live in the arsehole of the armpit of the back of beyond if I have a very supportive faculty and a good apartment. I've had a freezing apartment but really engaged colleagues and students (good), a comfortable apartment but the management were nasty and some dickish colleagues and students (very bad), a suitable apartment and very good faculty and students (nice), and a gross apartment, great faculty and lovely students (bad). |

17th Century? Maybe I should have said 15th.... We're talking about new teachers, I responded to scot's quote of "40 years" in a mildly amusing way, thinking I was responding in kind to his self-depreciating tone. He has a hell of a lot of experience, but maybe not every moment he's had is appropriate to the youngsters of today.. or it could be?
Also I said a wrong reason to enter into TEFL was "You don't know what you want to do with your life ", and his (next) reply was "I failed in life and needed a job."
The juxtaposition of those two comments is clear, but to a more experienced teacher he was joking or provoking further dialogue. I assessed the various outcomes that could result after my reply and decided scot's post was in jest and my own would do likewise. Either that, or I didn't reply at all, and what fun would that be? |

I think I got into it for the wrong reasons, but stayed for the right ones. |

I do! I traveled through East Asia and the Middle East earlier this year for nearly five months. I traveled independently, with no itinerary, made many friends, and absolutely loved the experience. Thank you for the advice. |

But that's better than "self-defecating." |

I am shocked that a young lady should use such language in mixed company. |

What would a "good reason" be ? To act as a missionary in spreading the Anglospheric ideals of democracy, liberty and free speech ? In teaching the Calibans of this World to obey Honkie ?

I'm a recoverer of self-deprecation seeking terms of self-effacement.
Self-aggrandizers are my sworn enemy.
I don't save the world, only my corner of it.
Ignorance is bliss, but I've spent a lot of time trying to disprove it.

Ahh, filters and poetry...The filtered term is "to sell oneself". |

There are stated policies in regard to circumventing this site's filter, boys.
And an observance of freedom to express and address meaning. I attempted to strike a balance.
Goad all you like, there's method to the madness and a thematic continuity to the post in regard to how anyone _____s themselves.
I reserve my altered states for what bosom (and whose) so extends the invitation by graces irresistible. I highly recommend the policy. |

I for one wasn't goading (WTH?!), and if the above counts as circumventing, all I can say is, that'd be looking for offence where literally none exists (think about it). |
