I'm curious now--what are the specific qualities of a "good photo"? I have one that I use as my standard professional photo, though it could have some issues with it.

If you are sending a scanned copy of your passport ID page, they are getting the formal mugshot.
I think this gives you latitude with the other pic you send (or post) as a 'personal picture'.
I use the term 'lifestyle picture' to describe this one.
Smiling or laughing in a social situation gives some indication of your ability to get along with others.
Posters referring to lack of response to applications should state whether these are unsolicited missionary approaches or formal applications to ads on SeriousTeachers or similar sites.
Ratio would be 5 or more to 1 against missionary approaches but these should still be part of your job search.

Is this true? Not doubting your word or anything, but is it a verified fact? Can you give a source. Seems like information that could benefit quite a few people

Are recruiters the ones to use? I mean, why not just dish out the middle man and deal with a school directly? I met a guy online who told me recruiters are bad.

Unless one actually visits the school, he can't be sure that he is dealing with a school official. Most public schools farm out the job to recruiters. You may think that you are dealing directly with the school, but you really aren't.

However, if you are using email addresses that you found on school websites, you may never get an answer for one of two reasons:

1. That address is never checked or it has been disconnected

2. The FAO/manager doesn't reply because he farms out the hiring process to a recruiter and can't be bothered to respond because he doesn't care and/or he doesn't speak English.

This is a very good time to search for schools for a February start. Just because there is an opening at mid-semester doesn't mean that it's a bad school. It is equally possible that the FT was let go because he was a moron, or the school came up short in the Fall. With the tightening of standards, either scenario is likely. In some places, there aren't enough morons with bona fide degrees to go around.

'Missionary' applications ie where there is no known need is always going to be hard. Especially so at this time of year.
If you have a preferred city put up a post on Dave's or other site 'Anyone working in Dalian/Yantai/Shenyang?'
Can I ask where you are getting your school names?
The Wikipedia page for most cities has an Education link in a sidebar and most tertiaries will be listed.
Not often the actual school website will linked but armed with a school name you can get to a website via Google.
Once on the site look for 'International' or 'Foreign Affairs Office'.
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but again there is no easy path at this time of year.
