Hi All,
Does anyone have any experience with moving to Japan with an unlocked smartphone and successfully using it with a Japanese phone provider?
I am moving to Osaka in February and I currently have the iPhone 6 with AT&T in the U.S. At the moment, my phone is not unlocked, but I plan to have it unlocked before I move to Japan. I read online that unlocked AT&T phones may be compatible with Docomo, Softbank, or possibly eMobile.

However, a friend of mine, who lived in Japan a few years back, said that the Japanese service providers are very strict with allowing a new customer to use a previous phone. So I guess I am just trying to figure out if I will be able to use my current phone (once I unlock it). And if I am able to use it in Japan with a new SIM card and cell/data plan, can I expect the service and functions to be just as good as a Japanese iPhone? Or is it better to just try and sell my U.S. iPhone altogether and get a Japanese phone?
Thanks in advance for any feedback! |

I think there was a recent law passed that says they all have to be unlocked, but that it willl take time to come into full effect. You should loook into MVNOs, they are quite new and provide a phone number and sim card cheap, without a binding monthly device payment.
For further info, try the reddit Japan forums as there are far more users over there than here nowadays |
