No. Terrible. I heard of a small town in America called Arkansas that's pretty good. You should head there as soon as possible.

Sssshhh! You'll ruin it!

Anyways, OP...come on. Search the city. It's huge. You can basically find anything you'd like. Like most big cities, it is what you make it. What do you want from us?

I'm asking people if they enjoy living there, I have an offer to go to Shenzhen and Beijing.

I have to make a decision.

I'm leaning towards Shenzhen, for air quality.

Guangzhou and Shenzhen are totally different animals.

Will you work in Shenzhen, but live in Guangzhou? If so, why? If not... did you mean to put Shenzhen in the Subject and message portions?

What do you want to do?

Do you drink and party?

Will you stay home and eat rice and vegetables?

Do you eat Western food all the time?

What are the pro's and con's of the offers?

Will you stay long-term?

What's your experience?

What type of job is it?

What's your plan if it doesn't work out?

If consider south, do you want to learn Cantonese or Mandarin?

Do you have a pro's and con's list already?

Either way, ask yourself these questions. Do as much research as you can on the cities based on these criteria. Match up likes and dislikes accordingly....and the big one :

Hunt this forum for past threads on each city, as there are literal books written.

O.K.

Guangzhou's got all of the partying, pollution, people and psychoactives you can shake a metaphorical stick at.

I think he wants information about GZ, it seems to me he pretty clearly stated that, and, in fairness that is why fora like this exist, I would have thought. However, I could be wrong, and what OP really wanted was a smart ass non answer to his question, in which case, well done you.

I lived in GZ for 6 years, it had / has a bad rep, but I had personal reasons for going, and I loved it. Its not the cleanest but, as many of the universities are well away from down town this need not be a huge factor, living on the university island where 200,000 students reside is actually quite pleasant. I would be there still 'cept a double your money offer came along.

Proximity to HK and SZ is a plus, a weekend in HK is great for a weary soul, but, in fairness GZ has plenty to offer in terms of distraction, some great pubs and restaurants, The paddyfield and Chez max for starters.

Its too hot for many, but the winters are pleasant, never too cold, but those 8 month boiling summers can be a drag, well humid too.

Its not cheap by Chinese standards, but better than SZ, if you have accom included you don't need to spend much to live basically, but party animal is a different story. I liked the night life there but it is well expensive, Shanghai is working out cheaper in that regard for me

Hey, you guys need to preview your posts before hitting submit. JB140767 made the above quoted comments, not me. I simply corrected the statement about Arkansas. Confused

Guangzhou is a huge city, area-wise. You will need to find the address of the school before you can discern any useful information.

Laughing You guys are too kind Laughing

I must be spending too much time in harsher forums.

Not trying to troll, but I figured for sure the title of this thread, and the absolutely zero bones thrown inside would surely get more snarky responses than mine.

All said, I love Guangzhou. It's huge, and you can really find anything your looking for. I think it's infinitely more interesting than Beijing, outside of BJ's amazing music scene. Guangzhou does have a few really great venues, like "T Union." and most bands you'd want to see will make a stop there.

There's a great art space called Loft 345. Club scenes I'll never be interested in, but they're there if you need them. DIY underground kids doing stuff under the radar.

A variance of food that's hard to find other places.

Some of the best people watching near the Canton tower, stadium, etc.

The south is excellent, but again, ask yourself the above questions and do a lot of research. Either can be a heavy commitment.

Baiyun Guanzhou District is about a 40 minutes bus ride to the nearest subway station. On the plus side, the air quality there is much cleaner than downtown.

On the negative side, I think the buses stop at around 22.00 at night, so nights out on the town are not on - unless you want to pay through the nose for a taxi back to the Baiyun District, which could cost around 300-500 RMB for the privilege.

This is the location of Guandong University of Foreign Studies (or Guang Wai - for short). As mentioned, the air quality is good, and there is the mountain right on the doorstep of the university, for those who like hiking and outdoor activities.

If you prefer a more urban environment, right downtown - then you should look at Sun Yat Sen University, and Jinan University. I attended the latter for a summer Chinese language course, and it is right in the middle of the up market Tianhe District. Air quality is good enough, but not perfect. Being right in the middle of things is good though, and the football stadium is just a short ride away by subway. You can follow the famous Evergrande Football team, with unlimited buying potential, Brazilian players and even the coach is Brazilian. The team recently contested the World Championships of club teams in Japan, but lost to Barca, 3-0 in favor of the Catalans. The Evergrande Football team, Guanzhou, has - by far - the most avid fans in China...streets ahead of all the other clubs. The irony about Guangzhou, is that even though it is a huge metropolis with around 10 million people +, it has more of a small town feel compared with Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Shenzhen and other Tier 1 cities. Every district in Guanzhou is like a separate entity.
