This is a thread for suss job ads where something just seems off to you.
At first glance this linked add might look ok, 20K has a nice ring to it until you dig just a tiny bit
http://jobs.echinacities.com/jobchapter/1354478125
I really don't like such big spreads, why is the salary 10K to 20K? Am I likely to get 20K? - I think not. Even if you negotiate well to say 16K thats 14.5 after tax, 13K if they deduct social security. Accommodation and bills in Shanghai? Your now at 10K for 40 hours, probably less, round bout 50 - 60 RMB per hour.
But at least there demands are not high, qualified, experienced American scientist willing to do kids parties at the weekend - sounds a blast, sign me up!! Oh, damn, I'm not American, oh well... |

Looks like they'd be ok with a Canadian - they say North American:-) Very appealing! (not). |

May surprise a few people here but Tsinghua uni offers a job I wouldn't touch.
If I said the following it would make it sound reasonable to good:
Above average uni salary.
16 hours a week.
Accommodation provided.
Teach at Tsinghua.
Then if I followed it up with this information:
10k/month with 1k deducted for 'BJ taxes' - so salary is 9,000 in BJ - not that much.
16 hours a week but you have to design your own curriculum and tests, then submit lesson plans for approval.
Accommodation is shared in the international students' dorm. You get your own bedroom but everything else is shared. Hot water from 7am-9am and 7pm-9pm.
All for the name 'Tsinghua' on your C.V. I'll pass. |

I did a year a ZheJiang, it is nice to have on CV, and it has certainly helped later, but, yeah, that year was no picnic a plenty. Shared has always been my biggest no-no |

I'm always wary of jobs in first tier cities for exactly the reasons you've stated, OP. Higher salary doesn't always translate to more money at the end of the month.
Third tier cities can suck, but you'll bank so much more.
Come to think of it, China is pretty much split into these two scenarios when it comes to teaching here. |
