Good post.
It's hard not to feel a little schadenfreude at this news.
Hell Dave's is awash with threads and posts on the Z visa issue.
What's not mentioned (at least I haven't seen it) is sanctions against the schools. |

One could take a couple of lessons from this (and many other similar stories):
1. Never come to China to work without a Z visa.
2. Come to China to work without a Z visa, but avoid Beijing and Shanghai like hell. |

Didn't think about that. If anything the schools should be punished much more harshly than the teachers. It's the school that's responsible for visas. |

Actually, there have been raids and stings in other jurisdictions, so your first lesson offered is very valid. |

Wait, alarm bells!
Technically, every foreigner must be have proper documentation with them at all times. Usually this means a valid passport and visa. But it doesn't have to be a Z visa
If one is going is going to believe you'll be paid 20,00 a WEEK, then you should be analyzed, not imprisoned
If you go to a job interview with a z visa, that's when you should get arrested. You can't work for two different companies. All those who went without a Z visa didn't do anything illegal. If you have another kind (and of course you do or you wouldn't be in China) then you may seek employment and depending on certain things, you can eventually work legally for these people. Bear in mind you'll need to leave the country, get an offer letter, etc. you know the drill
Though 30K is not a lot for the Chinese police system to reward snitches, it's highly unlikely they police would go to such extremes to find cheaters. It's really far easier. Going to a job interview is NOT ILLEGAL. There are countless gov't supported job fairs for foreigners every year, especially in Beijing and Shanghai.

You should be writing the China Law Blog....this is "drunk legal advice" akin to the ever successful advice for being pulled over by a Florida State Trooper when holding an open alcoholic beverage between you legs....simple put your thumb over the opening and thus, no longer an open container.....
Deportation actions incl. incarceration awaiting disposition is not subject to laws but regulations.....

There sure are a lot of teachers on that blog that would give up a fellow teacher for a little Christmas cash bonus and to supposedly cleanse their community of those evil law breakers.
Although I'm completely legit, I hardly think I would be a fink and get others in trouble. If they get caught by chance, that's on them. Oh well, I guess that's why I keep to myself and limit communication or connections with most foreigners, other than on a superficial level.

No, but you can work for company A and interview at company B if you plan on changing jobs. You're not working for 2 companies, you're looking ahead.

Agree, nothing wrong with that. I said you can job hunt while working. It's normal. Follow the proper procedures and everything is fine

Admitting is not enough to imprison you!
Without proof, you won't get arrested. If the police catch or you are reported by certain officials, then yes

Okay I should have been clearer. Signing a contract with a new company while working with your original visa at your first company is the faux pas
