At the risk of someone labeling me a troll too I'm curious to know the thoughts of anyone else living in Beijing.
I accept that if you come here you have to accept the rough with the smooth and the smog is a big negative. I'm married to a Chinese national so I have been kinda stuck here because of her work but this month has been the straw that broke the camels back for me. Even the schools are closing because of it!
I have 4 more teaching months left then that's it for me, we're both heading to the UK
I wish I could post pictures on here, I've got a brilliant before and after pic taken from the flat window of the last red alert day. |

Not my school! We will have to eat a lot of lung cleaning soup to deal with it though.
My girlfriend walks about 15 minutes to get to her work and when she comes home in the evening it smells like she's been out camping for a weekend....hair smells like smoke.
I came here in January and it was not too bad until what...a month or two ago? Then it went downhill fast. This morning was insane out where I live. |

Except it isn't just Beijing is it?
The whole of the north east from harbin down to shandong was covered under a blanket of smog.
Hebei cities have some of the worst pollution indexes in the country. |

Well the air can be bad, but dealing with it is simple:
- Get the aqicn app and check the PM2.5 level before leaving the house.
- Don't do sports outdoors when the levels are medium. (deeply breathing particulate matter is the real danger)
- Don't go out without mask if levels are high.
- keep your windows shut and air out the room only when levels are safe. (or air it out as often as you like if you use an air purifier afterwards)
Depending on the city, the percentage of days where you are totally safe without a mask varies between 20 and 90 percent.
If you regard all this, you will live as long and healthy as in any clean western place.

I am not at all bored. People need to be informed of the health hazards of working in China - especially if they have asthma. China could easily kill them. I think you may be the one who might be "ignorant". Korea and Singapore are much cleaner and pay better too. You can stay in China as long as YOU like, but next year I'm headed to Singapore where I can earn $40K a year for 5 days instead of $18K for 6 days in China. Health comes before money in my book. |

Love is blind righ? Like many expats I met someone in China and now that I was offered a full time gig in Beijing I decided to turn it down and go plant some roots in super clean Singapore. I will take my partner with me.
Yeah the winter air has been bad as long as I can remember, but recently it has been the worst ever that I can recall. The govt. proved they can clean the air when they host big ASEAN or APAC events, yet they do not choose to do it on a daily basis. Really as shame. Investors take note - invest in China cancer clinics now! |

Away from the ad hominen stuff this is an important point.
Those people who put down the lower paid FTs should understand that the barriers to entry into teaching in China have been low or non-existent.
On another thread someone who says another poster is an idiot for working for 6K in a max 20 public contract later reveals they have a higher degree and multiple ESL certs. |

Yes, I've seen this so many times that it's become a pet peeve. A poster goes on about how easy it is to rake in 25K+, and only fools settle for less. When pressed, the same person later reveals that oh yes, he/she happens to have a PhD, DELTA, 20 solid years of home country teaching experience followed by an overseas post as teacher trainer with thousands of hours monitoring, etc. Such people either genuinely believe that the typical foreign teacher in China has similar credentials or (as I suspect) they are setting up a reason to reel off their own stellar credentials and wow the whole group. This is really tiresome stuff that serves no constructive purpose for anyone. |
