Hello!
I'm contemplating a move to the region and was wondering what your estimate on average living expenses are. I understand this answer might vary widely based on lifestyle and city but I was hoping that I could maybe get a range. Until I understand the cost of living, calculating salary figures is meaningless. |

Maybe you can get an idea from some supermarket websites:
https://www.carrefouruae.com/Market.aspx?language=en&country=uae
http://www.luluhypermarket.com/AE/all/promotions
Then try Spinney's, Suq Planet and Abu Dhabi Coop.
It would be difficult to know your requirements, but I would say that most of us are compensated fairly well, or we would not choose to stay. If you like to cook meals in and entertain at home or on a BBQ and aren't a big drinker, then you can manage all right.
Things that can shoot a hole in the budget are school fees.
A used car can be reasonable and gas is still a deal here. |

This depends on what sort of job you get... and what your credentials are. To get a decent job in the UAE, you need an MA + a few years of related experience... or if you are thinking of teaching kids, you need an official teaching license/cert from your home country + related experience.
I see from the thread on the Saudi branch that you have the credentials. Check out the Teachaway website for information on UAE jobs.

Grocery bills depend very much on which supermarket you choose and what you eat. Carrefour and Lulu are the cheapest. I've just furnished my entire flat for 9000 AED with stuff from Ikea and white goods from Coop in AD Mall. My rent is 77k/pa, net 500/month but you can get cheaper and utilities are cheap.Pizzas, burgers, kebabs and other fast food cost nothing. The vegetables have different grades ie from Spain, Tunisia, Egypt and it's up to you what you want to pay. Seafood ie squid and shrimps are cheap at about 35/kg. A portion of Nile Perch 14, Salmon 20-ish and hamour for 3 about 60. You can live on 100 a day easily if you don't go to pubs and hotels and live somewhere with a pool etc like I do. A 5-litre wine box is about 80 from the shop but wine is 50 a glass in a bar/hotel. |
