I live in Hawaii, and it's not financially feasible for me to attend an in-person interview for a Big Eikaiwa (AEON, Interac, etc.) on the U.S. mainland.

I haven't applied to any yet (I will soon starting this March), but I'm curious, has anyone had only a Skype interview and been accepted to an eikaiwa or ALT dispatch company? I will apply to only those ones for now.

Thanks!

I know COCO Juku does skype interviews for all their hiring. No in-person interview required. I know people who worked for them, and it seems they do a lot of hiring for people outside Japan. May be worth giving a shot.

If I remember correctly Coco Juku's interview requirements are a tad much.

CoCo Juku is owned by Nichii Gakkan, a medical services company, which also owns GABA. Both are cut throat Japanese run eikaiwa businesses that operate outside the law regarding labor regulations.

There have been many complaints of labor law violations committed by CoCo Juku and Gaba over the last few years, which have been reported to the General Union. Strangely, CoCo Juku forces all new hires to join their in-house union. Bear in mind that it is illegal for any company to interfere with the formation or management of a labor union. Many teachers join the General Union, anyway.

Some people who have worked at CoCo Juku believe that it is the kind of company that could suddenly one day close it's doors. And the teachers simply won't get paid.

I had one good Skype interview with Gaba and one killer follow-up interview, before being mysteriously turned down ('you were perfect or the position, but we're going with someone else anyway'). Take that as you will.

You are aware that companies lie, right?

I suppose I am still naive in that regard, but I do really think that the interviews went well. They had several opportunities to turn me down (application, first interview, pre-interview task), but only did so right before the finish line.
