So, on the CoE application it asks if I've ever be deported from Japan or any other country. Over the summer I was actually deported from Ireland after I had arrived at the airport. I had gotten a month long job at a summer camp, but the company that hired me never bothered to tell me that I needed a work permit.

Should I just mark no on the deportation question? Do they usually check these things? Or should I say yes and explain what happened? Will this affect my chances of receiving my work visa?

Were you deported or just refused entry? I believe they are different.

I have no first-hand experience on this, but I don't think they would (or would be able to) check. I do think it would affect your chances of receiving a visa.

Ah, thanks, I forgot there was a difference. I was refused entry. Does that mean I don't have to mention it?

If you were not deported, then you would answer 'no' to a question asking if you were deported.

If you were turned back at the airport, without being admitted into the country, then you were refused entry, not deported. You cannot be deported if you are not first admitted into a country. Deportation is a legal action, ordered by a judge or other judicial entity.
