hi, i will be moving to japan in the nagoya area near the end of August and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good internet service for my laptop. Does anyone know of a company that's cheap and easy to set up? I heard of yahoo bb and ocn, but has anyone actually used them and how much does it end up costing? How do I go about setting up the service. Any help would be appreciated.

my real estate agent applied for a phone line for me and got me yahoobb - costs me about 4000 yen a month, unlimited dls, fast adsl and got first 3 months free (maybe it was an initial promotion they had that is no longer current, don't know). Modem was free/provided with the service.

laptop or desktop is irrelevant.

Setting up - i think this topic has come up before but you'd need to download the application forms and get someone to fill them out in Japanese for you presumably. Search this forum for more information.

Cross-reference: Please see my post in the "Buying/Selling a phone line" thread. I've given some good information there. It's for FLET'S ADSL.

Cheers,

I'm currently with Docomo FREE-D and it's working just fine. The service allows me to take my laptop anywhere, which is very convienent for me. The initial charge for the first month was just over 6000Y and for each month after was abot 4800Y. The Lan card is rated at 64kbps which is a little slow I guess but it works for me. I hope this helps Cool

I'd recommend going with Yahoo BB if it is available in the area where you would be, which it most likely will be. It comes with Internet phone included, and depending upon where you are from, can be a cheap way to make calls home. You can get more information and apply through www.bbapply.com in English - I guy named Jimmie who is a Yahoo agent manages the site and is a huge help. He'll also help you set up your NTT phone line.

Be careful buying a line. You can rent one from NTT now, at only about 600-700 Yen a month more than service on an owned line. The owned market is going away and the resale value of a line when you leave Japan is dropping every year. At any rate, do the math. With a phone line costing you 30,000 Yen+, you'll have to be in Japan for awhile to make it pay off for you.
