Dear Phil_k,

Oh, I guess I have a few skeletons, but I know damn well that I wouldn't be able to live with myself there were universal rumors that a colleague was committing sex offenses with children and I did nothing about it

You may be made of sterner stuff.

Regards,
John

Going round in circles here, John. There's a lot of difference and a whole bunch of libel actions between knowing damn well about something and hearing rumours.

In the same situation, would you risk everything to out someone based on rumours?

Dear Hod,

I would - not because I am such a noble soul, but, as I mentioned, I like to be able to sleep nights and doing nothing in such a situation would make that highly unlikely.

Call it "enlightened self-interest."

Regards,
John

Why?

Probably because he loathes and detests everything to do with the UK. Mind you, he now enjoys the benefits of living there, including municipal housing.
It beats me how he bears it. Pyongyamg or Havana would be more to his liking. There is a sadness about a washed-up TEFLER with delusions of intellectual and academic grandeur.

You mean scotty is living in a free council housing, and travelling with a free bus pass? He should thank Queen Elizabeth for his benefits! Laughing

Probably doesn´t use the OAP bus pass. From his tax-free earnings in KSA he might drive a Merc.

Oddest thread evolution I've seen. Using John's logic, every German person born before 1920 should be pilloried if alive or otherwise dug up and then pilloried.

Where were these so-called rumours when Saville was alive? He was odd alright, but so are lots of people, but that doesn't make them criminals like he was.

For the third time, you can't just out someone based on rumours. This is the real world. You'll end up in court yourself owing millions in libel/slander damages.

How about outing a few other famous people?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11155184/Operation-Yewtree-Paul-Gambaccini-describes-year-of-trauma-after-he-is-told-he-will-not-face-charges.html

Not guilty. His lawyers will retire on this. All because of rumours.

Like Wogan, I'm not defending Saville. He would've spent his last decades in jail but for the scared victims, dismissive police, lazy journalists and of course Wogan (RIP).

Just like Sir Wogan.

For anyone who doesn't play golf or plays like me, this is amazing, i.e. it's probably still the longest televised putt in history after 35 years, not matched since by Tiger Woods (who?), Rory, Phil M or any of them.

Check the smug celebration. Rolling Eyes

In media circles Savile's proclivities were common knowledge during his lifetime. Wogan said some time ago that he knew about the goings on but said nothing.

Dear Hod,

That's called a difference of opinion. It's fine with me if you'd ignore rumors of this sort:

"Veteran television and radio star Sir Terry Wogan has told how widespread rumours about Jimmy Savile used to sweep the BBC but nobody did anything about them. "I was sitting at a table having lunch and Savile was sitting one up from me, and also up from me was Jean Rook [Express columnist]. And Jimmy Savile got up to go to the loo, and she looked across at me and said: 'When are they going to expose him?' I said: 'That's your job.' And nobody ever did."

I wouldn't, but I guess Mr. Savile counted on your reaction being the case.

It was nobody's job.

Regards,
John

If you were God and Jimmy Saville stood before you ...?
How would you weigh, in the balances, his charity work, employment opportunities for staff, etc etc against his sexual proclivities?

In media circles, some time ago, some bloke in the pub said, etc.

Not much to go on, is it? If I can be so offhand, imagine what a lawyer would do.

So what would you have done? You'd have gone to the police, and then what? Write to your MP? How do you think you would have changed a thing here?

And stop talking about "my reaction", please. If I'd have known, I'd have done the same as you with the same result.

I see that Hod and the rattling Sheikh, cast aspersions at my living in a house owned by the people. I would point out that Mrs-Windsor-Mountbatten (formerly Save-Coburg-Gotha) does the same.

Are they inciting the lieges to rise against the Monarch ?

Your link doesn't work, but..

I'd be going left hopefully as I'm pretty sure I've never destroyed anyone's life.
