There is often quite a strong gaijin community based around bars, sports team networks, martial arts, music nights and so on, though even that might not compensate for things if you're not into those sorts of activities, or are shy and socially withdrawn. And it can take time to get into those networks and get established. |
My point was that there is quite often NOT these things for people in the JET program. Gaijin bars etc require other gaijin. If you are placed someplace very rural, then you may not have these things. Some people are placed where there isn't even a train to get out of the town or village. Some are on remote islands, and there is only one or two ferries out and one or two ferries back in each day.
Like I said, JET is a human resources mechanism to get people into mostly rural placements- some are places where without the JET program, it would be VERY difficult to get anyone to come to. |

I got that point but one of my points is that it's what you make of it. One of my friends was placed out in a rural area and used to meet up with other JETs on the weekends. He got to know the locals and became like a local celebrity, which I think he quite enjoyed.
My point also was that it affects different people in different ways. Some people might love being stuck on an island. Other people might end up in the big city and go nuts with all the crowds, noise and every-man-and-woman-for-themselves attitude. |

Only US citizens can apply.
I think pay is 35,000 and housing is free.
I know another teacher who did it. I think he was in Minsk. |

Wow! I hadn't heard of this before. It sounds like a very nicely organized program! If it's still around, I know what I'm going to do for a year after I retire! |
