|
|
Hello Everyone,
I'm curious as to what you guys think. I know we each have some spare cash and time for vacation. I want to have a thought experiment as to where our US dollars/GBP, etc. go the farthest. Where can we get good vacations for a low/reasonable/fair price?
As part of this experiment, let's not count the cost of the plane ticket, as that is a totally different matter.
1. From my experience, my best place is Tunisia. Here is why:
- It has a lot of French culture, which is very interesting in it's own right. Plenty of good, fresh, high quality food, especially great pizza and Arabic food.
- Hotels, etc. are good quality and prices (I stayed in Djerba for $35 a night at a five star resort)
- In case you need to go to the hospital, Tunisian's doctors are French trained, so they are good.
- Inexpensive taxi's, etc.
- Some inexpensive, but really great experiences are possible (Star Wars tours, riding camels, eating camel dishes, etc.).
2. From my experience, I would also guess Eastern Europe (especially Romania) is good.
3. Your thoughts? |

- Pretty much deserted by Western tourists since the 2015 beach massacre so better service and more grateful locals

Eastern European food generally sucks. As does food from the Philippines, which would be on my list for best value other stuff.
I still think Thailand is hard to beat, even though it's got a lot more expensive. |

How can my money go far in Canada, compared to a traditionally cheap place like Thailand or even my Tunisia? |

Come North!! Experience the joys of cold weather for a change!
The Rockies, both oceans, and millions of miles of empty highways await:-) |

Tunisia is cheap. Hotels are empty because of massacres of German, British and other tourists. Watch your back. And your front !
You might pay for a cheap holiday with your life blood. |

I also vote for Thailand. There are cheaper places to visit but not many with such an attractive combination of easy accessibility, great food, interesting culture, fantastic beaches and friendly locals.
On a side note, I was just in South Africa on safari and due to the dramatic loss in value of the rand recently, it was much much cheaper than expected. Great scenery, pretty cheap food and great wine |

Thanks, guys.
I like Tunisia a lot (and have been there five times), including one month recently. I was there last month and never once felt unsafe; certainly not like when I lived in Libya.
Maybe Eastern Europe, other parts of Thailand, and South Africa will be my next destinations. |

Bien sûr, Tunis est la meilleure place pour les touristes.
J’adore the couscous est la chorba de Djerba!
Go for Tunisia.
Do no listen to scotty, he has never been to Tunisia. |

Mexico is also a good destination right now, you get a lot of pesos for your dollar right now. I really nice hotel is around $25-$30 a night, a hostel can be found for $10, an upscale hostal with kitchen roof garden, etc. for about $15. Lots of cultural events only cost a few dollars. Food is cheap, you can get sweet rolls in a bakery for around 25 cents, a complete lunch of soup, rice, beans, tortillas, main dish and usually something to drink for around $3, sometimes less. Transport is cheap, with most public transportation in the 25 cents to 40 cents range. All these prices are for Mexico City, which is probably the most expensive city in Mexico, and accurate as of two weeks ago, I was just there. |
