It's 40 hours of his time a week, plus travel, for 13000 in Beijing.

That is [on average] 177 hours of time in the office in a 31 day month.

13000 / 177 = 73 RMB an hour.

There are jobs advertised for NON natives that pay 10000 with housing for goodness sake.

Perhaps you could link up a few potential jobs for the OP to point him in the right direction? From my (admittedly brief) search for positions in Beijing, it seemed that most of the higher paying jobs required at least 1-2 years of teaching experience.

Just looking at one of the first adverts on Dave's.

http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/china/index.cgi?read=39966

That's 12000+ in Changsha without housing for the same amount of hours.

And Changsha will allow him or her to rent a house with bills for under 2000. So the OP would have 10,000+ for spending.

After bills in Beijing he / she will have less than 7000...maybe less than 6000.

Ok, that sounds quite reasonable.

OP, do make sure to come back and let us know what your final decision was.

17000 after tax, housing and bills will leave less than 10000.

I can get 13000 for 15 hours plus housing in a decent school.

That's for less than 1/3 of the hours EF would squeeze.

Based on previous research, China has a progressive tax code. If I rememebr correctly, not much tax comes off at lower income levels. Maybe the first 12 thousand has very little taken off, even up to 20,000 has a bit more off, but not much. So, at 17,000, would you lose up to 1,000? The total % coming off for just income tax was maybe 4 or 5 %? Don't quote me as I don't have the data in front of me. I'm just remembering what I saw and a list of the tax codes. I calculated what you really pay. Not much starts coming off until you are 20,000 or 30,000 rmb, I think?

So, the amount coming off would probably be less than 1,000. But, the rent if you want something new and modern, depending on how picky you are will cost you. If you want a new one bedroom apartment, you might pay 5000 to 6000 rmb? If you're less picky and willing to live farther away, you could pay 2 or 3 thousand?

Anyways, 17 minimum would be just the beginning for no experience. You should aim to have 10 to 12 thousand rmb left over after paying rent anyways and maybe tax too. But of course if you can get more than 17 and signing bonuses, don't be afraid to do that too. Either way, EF is not realistic with their salaries. They should give free nice single housing. If they did that, it would be a good deal. But without, nope!

...and as a bonus, once you get experience, you can ask for more.

Maybe find a smaller city and a good salary. You'd put more away.
